9/16 wrench for 3/8 bolt Grade 8. And I haven't had any issues since I started doing it.
This is what I did. REESE Towpower 72783 Universal Coupler Lock, Heavy-Duty Storage Security, REESE Towpower 72783 Universal Coupler Lock, Adjustable Storage Security, REESE Towpower 727 Yellow and Chromed Steel, Duty Steel
Good luck drilling bolt holes in this; I wouldn't, and I certainly didn't try. If you want bolt on, I would buy exactly what you need for the price of drill bits. The actual item is the one in which there are no mounting points. Has a great safety feature, my friend had one and you were afraid of hurting your fingers and hand, and it could have caused serious harm, but not with this brand. You are in complete control at all times, and I am confident that the safety features will keep my off-road vehicle safe. Always have a road trailer with you.
I'm sure I'll forget to respond to your specific question, but as a side note, I bought a weld on stand and never bothered to put it on; instead, I simply set the tongue on the ground.

I had the old style flip up hitch lock on my cargo trailer, but after borrowing a friend's trailer with the new style, I knew I had to make the switch. I ordered this and the matching crank, then cut off my old ones and welded these new ones in their place. Immediate gratification. It is both inexpensive and simple to do.
Installed on a utility trailer that is 18 feet long. I tow a 35 horsepower frontend loader, hay, concrete pallets, and drill stem loads. Should be able to complete the task. In ten years, come back and ask me.
I chopped and sectioned this to fit a 4X4 square tongue tube, but it's solidly welded on and I'm very happy with the result.
This hitch is a lot more durable than the one that came with my trailer. It took longer to cut the old one off than it did to weld the new one together. It also seems to have a better grip on the ball. When I went to the landfill the other day, the old on popped off the ball.
This was welded onto my boat trailer by a family member. There will be no more battling with the traditional boat trailer tongue. It's simple to put on and take off, and it's very tough and durable.
For the money, this is a fantastic purchase. I had it installed by a welder the same day I got it, and he was blown away.
It's not bad, but you'll need some fabrication experience to put it together. We made it work with a little persuasion and a competent welder. It's been great since I got it set up, and I haven't had any issues yet. It is unbeatable in terms of value for money.
I replaced a flimsy, falling apart hitch on a $12,000 horse trailer with this one, which is much more secure.
