Plastic is one of the most widely used materials They're made of metal and fit my RAV 4's side rails perfectly.
No, I haven't had any noise issues, and I've driven the car at highway speeds on several occasions.
I'm not sure what "tails" means, but the cross bars stay firmly in place wherever they're set and tightened along the side rails. To secure the luggage to the crossbar and rails, you'll need a strap of some sort. I hope this has been of assistance.
A hex key is used to connect them. It's simple to remove.

On the 2018 RAV4, the maximum distance between the crossbars is 29". While the width can be adjusted, the maximum is 29". The OEM model allows for a distance of up to 42 inches. When mounting a large carrying bin on the roof, the smaller space is a BIG PROBLEM. At higher speeds, there is less stability and more vibration. I bought the product because it had a higher carrying capacity (150 pounds vs. 100 pounds for others) and I expected it to perform similarly to the OEM version. If the cross bars are primarily intended for mounting a bike rack or a boat/canoe rack, the product is excellent. There are probably better options if the goal is to mount a larger (longer) cargo bin. br>There are two more minor flaws: On a $100 item, you'd think the seller would include a ten-cent allen wrench to help with installation. A plastic or rubber plug should be placed in the four top indentations where the allen screws will sit. This will reduce future rust and dirt issues that cause the screws to become "frozen. " I used small beads of black silicone caulk to fill in the gaps.
Before buying these for my 2018 Rav4, I looked at four different brands. I wish I'd bought it sooner.

It was well packaged. There are instructions included in the package. It is very simple to set up. It appears to be in good condition. Shipping was quick (it took 3 days to get here). (4 days ahead of schedule). The installation should take no more than 10 minutes. I'm thinking about putting a dab of silicon in the screw slot to keep water out, but I'm not sure it'll be necessary. If there is a disadvantage, it is that the rails cannot be locked. I knew that going in, and it may have been a good thing if I later decided to sell the vehicle. For less than $90, this is a fantastic product. Added photos. br>Update 1/4/21br> I like the look and plan to add a cargo basket soon.
These took me ten minutes to put on. Simply loosen the bottom piece with an Alan wrench, open and twist it, position it under the rack, and tighten it down. I measured 3" back from the front mount so that the front of the bar lines up just along the edge of the back of my sunroof, and while I agree with another reviewer that the rear bar could have gone back a little further, I got it 3" from the front of the back mount.
On a 2014 RAV4, use this kit. I tried a less expensive set, but it broke the first time I tried to mount it. br>These are a lot nicer and more comfortable. There is no need for a small key to put these on. Hex head screws are all that is required. They're nice and sturdy, and they're easy to install.
My 2014 Rav 4's bars didn't fit correctly.
It appeared to be flimsy, and I was never able to mount it due to missing components. It also appeared to be in good condition and made of low-cost plastic. This is a product that I would not recommend.
