Selected User Reviews For Grumbacher Vine Charcoal, Soft, 12/Pk (V4112)
I'm a complete beginner who is enrolled in an art class. The teacher advised that you purchase Vine Charcoal. For the first class, she loaned me a piece of her own charcoal; It was quite soft and drew beautifully. I chose Grumbacher Soft because I adore my Grumbacher watercolors and had never purchased charcoal before. I felt let down. The charcoal stick was fine in one area and made a nice line, but it was too hard to make a mark if I turned it slightly. I could get a slightly darker line (more like a pencil than a piece of charcoal) if I pushed hard enough. ) Because there are no art stores in my small town, I'll have to try a different brand and cross my fingers that it's softer and has a more uniform surface. Thanks.
It appeals to me. High-quality - It arrived in perfect condition. It's small and simple to operate - This is something that even a novice like me can use. In comparison to other brands, I found that this one arrived in good condition, whereas another order I placed - The product inside had been damaged, and the packaging was all messed up. Given that I don't do charcoal sketches every day, I believe this will last for a long time. I really enjoy it and will most likely order more as a backup.
These were purchased for a drawing class and have proven to be very useful. They blend beautifully, but if you're new to charcoal, you might want to avoid them. Because the charcoal does not stay in place, it is important to protect your work with a spray on fixative or something similar. Fortunately, all of my pieces arrived undamaged; I believe this is due to the delivery service rather than the Amazon seller. In either case, you can use this type of charcoal whole or broken! Artists, in general, tend to break these up into pieces, so I wouldn't be too concerned.
Instead of 12 pieces, I received 37! To be clear, ordering vine charcoal on the internet was entirely my fault. utter nonsense But I did, and I give this product five stars and the company that sold it to me two. Because of the following reasons:
- The box in the picture (sturdy; I already have one) is not the box you will receive (thin cardboard, cellophane-faced, SUPPOSEDLY 12 pieces; it bears no resemblance to the one in the picture). This, too, I believe was not by chance, because the advertised (teaser) box contains approximately 12 3-inch x 3-inch x 3-inch x 3-inch x 3-inch x 3-inch x 3-inch x packs. They want you to think you're getting a fantastic deal. (If something appears to be too good to be true, it most likely is. ) Indeed, I paid too much for what I received. For cast drawing, I need long pieces. As the flimsy box was stuffed into a too small manilla envelope and mailed to me, I received 37 short broken pieces. Yes, it was WRONGLY PACKAGED! For the low price of $6, you get deceptive advertising as well as irresponsible packaging. Be smarter than I am and, as I always say, purchase from your local art supply store.
The item arrived on time as promised today, but when I opened the package, I only found 11 vines out of a total of 12. It was a little perplexing because the item appeared to be sealed, which leads me to believe that this is some sort of b-list item. product that is in stock.
This box has lasted me over a month's worth of homework and projects at home. A fantastic deal on soft vine charcoal of high quality.
I've been using this charcoal in my drawing class, and it's packaged exactly how I'd like it to be. It's better than a lot of other brands, and it'll last you a long time, but it's not as soft as I'd expect "soft" charcoal to be. It has a lot of rough, hard edges that make gesture drawing difficult. br>br>In addition, the vine charcoal was all of the same width. I didn't notice any size variation, which I expected from a box of charcoal (and from the product pictures). br>br>In addition, as other reviewers have noted - It isn't packaged well. While it arrived in relatively complete pieces with only a few breaks, the packaging was not sturdy enough to transport it outside of my apartment without purchasing a new container (which would have doubled the cost of the charcoal). While the price appears to be reasonable on the surface, it will ultimately cost you more. Purchase items made in the area.
The sticks, on the other hand, were all the same size, measuring about 6mm in diameter. I've already received a refund from Amazon, and the customer service representative I spoke with has escalated the issue of the misleading product page. However, keep in mind that the photos do not accurately depict what you will receive when placing an order.
