Questions & Answers

The machine can be used to sew layers of denim, but can it really go through many layers?

The sewing machine I just bought has only been with me for a little more than a week, so I have yet to hem jeans with it. It managed to stitch through six layers of denim and did a good job. Previously, I didn't have a machine that was able to do that. My first impression is that I love this machine and have a fairly easy time learning how to operate it. Making buttonholes is the only problem I have encountered, but I have not spent a great deal of time on that.

Although it is considered heavy duty, is it also up to the job of sewing light materials and delicate items?

This product worked really well in sewing my granddaughter two skirts as well as a kimono out of fine tulle and no problems were encountered. Also, dance costumes made out of fine tulle stitched with silky appliqué appeared to be just fine. I've been sewing with it for years, and it's a dream.

Do you have the ability to lift the foot of the presser foot extra high?

The answer is yes.

Would you be able to take the feed dogs off the Brothers tough and sew machine for me to do free motion quilting using it?

You can do that. It can be found in the front storage area where the feed dog lever is located.

I have just purchased my first Brother
3/5

This machine is a beginner's machine. Since I started working with computers, I have mostly used Necchi machines. of all, let me make it clear that this is not a heavy duty machine. Cased in plastic, it is lightweight and easy to carry. There is no metal in the drop in bobbin or any of its components. On basic fabrics that are medium to light weight, the sewing machine does well. This is a good option if you want to walk around. I am happy with how uniform and tight the stitches are. It seems like tight tension is a problem when using knit fabric with elastic that has to be enclosed. My stitching was so tight that I had to increase the stitching height to 7. I top stitch, I'm getting long sections of skipped stitches. When I assemble garments, it works fine, but when I top stitch, I'm getting skipped areas. Reading the book and changing needle sizes as it recommends did help. There are a variety of needles available for each fabric. By following this tip you will be able to use the machine. When using real Brother needles, I find that it works best. Whenever I knit, Brother brand 75/11 stretch needles work best for me. I think I'll get the hang of changing needles for each project once I get more experienced. There are adjustable feed dogs for this machine. Since the stick constantly sticks up I just put them where they are and left them as is. There's a high likelihood you won't be able to get them back up if you change them all the way down. There is something wrong with the light on this machine. The light is terrible. I don't know if it's LED or other type of light but it is substandard. The book is placed next to a window to help you see it. Having worked as a sewer for several years, I know how to sew. I have been sewing for over 20 years, and the overall overall construction of this machine is not that impressive. It's flimsy and plastic, but once you learn the needle formula, the stitches are strong and even. The Necchi is going to serve as my back up and I'm going to put the old one back in. The machine you need if you need a real heavy duty one is not this one. It's okay using a light machine for small lightweight projects if you're experienced enough to be able to troubleshoot mistakes and give the needles a change so that the stitching works properly. It does not feed well for thicker or stretchy fabrics, so I strongly encourage using a walking foot.

At 70 I had no idea how to operate a sewing machine
5/5

I have been sewing my whole life and I thought I knew a lot about them. Previously, I used a Bernina, which I found to be too fussy, and then I switched to a Brother Serger when I purchased Aside from the quality of Brother machines, I feel they are a great company that backs up I have created more than 40 Renaissance Court costumes with my Brother machines, including costumes for kings and queens. My grandma (Meemo) has inspired me to start making doll clothes now that she has a grandchild. My Brother computerized machine has been with me for the last four years, but after I realized I will be making covers for a lawn swing and patio chairs outside, I decided to get the Brother Strong and Tough to use with the heavyweight fabrics that are required. After taking this machine out of its box, it took me about 15 minutes to set it up. It is easy to adjust the tension and type of stitches, and the stitches are nice and even. The fabric has been used now to make dresses for my granddaughter's dolls using faile and dotted swiss and I have taken away my seven-year-old granddaughter to try it out, too The year is While teaching her sewing with the machine, I show my granddaughter the machine. In the past, I had bought her a lightweight Brother to celebrate her birthday, but I think I will get her this one The new machine is much better than the computerized machine I had. I stored the older computerized machine on the sewing table to make room for this one. Now that I have had many years of experience with mechanical machines, I have found that I prefer them to computers. My jaw dropped when I heard that! I use my computerized machine only when there is an embroidery to be done. Otherwise, any embroidery I must perform is done by hand. That's how it is. Will always be that way. This machine has a rubber base that prevents it from moving while I sew, so I really appreciate that. It is wonderful that there are no skips in the stitching, and that it's easy to start sewing at the edge of the fabric without grasping the threads in the back to keep them will need the extra height adjustment on the presser foot when I make seat covers for my lawn swings, which will be used to work with thick fabric. While there are a few things I miss about my old computer, I am sure that I can train myself to adjust Pivoting fabric is done by pressing the button marked "down needle". There is a longer cord on the pedal foot so I can drop it behind the table instead of draping it forward across the surface. I can stitch at night without waking up my grandkids or their parents because of the quiet running motor. Nevertheless, it is worth putting up with these minor issues since the machine I have now should be my last. All the feet that I have for my old Brother machine will fit this one, however the bobbins are slightly different sizes and cannot be interchanged. In addition to the four bobbins that come with it, I had purchased more for my granddaughter's other sewing machine that worked perfectly with this machine, and it comes with a Teflon foot that will come in handy for many of the fabrics I use for It is a pleasure doing business with you. It's great to see Brother keeping on making such excellent.

The item you want to buy shouldn't be purchased
3/5

purchased this sewing machine and within six hours of use, the needle timing slipped and it didn't line up with the bobbin, so I couldn't thread it. The Brother service department told me I had to drive 221 miles to the nearest Brother specialist or ask them to bring it down to Tennessee for repair. It was not an option for me, as I needed the machine repaired in order to complete my task. In less than an hour, the device was returned from the city after being fixed. After calling the Brother Co. , I received the following message. In this case, the warranty will be used to cover the charge. In the event they failed to repair the problem, they wouldn't provide insurance coverage. The warranty is worthless, and they will send you to places that are ridiculous to travel for so that they don't have to pay for the repairs. Rather than asking why it broke after six hours of use, we will look at why it broke. Brother does not stand by the products it sells. I suggest that you do not purchase this item.

It's great to have it
5/5

I'd say yes to that! This is a great machine! We cut through 5 layers of Sunbrella fabric (marine canvas) in one go. The ST731HD performed perfectly on this project as described. I slowed down when I reached thick seams because that's just prudent. How does the self threader work? It works like a charm. I read the instructions, put the thread in the right place, and moved the lever as instructed. Play is an important part of childhood. Previous Amazon reviews on this product are what motivated me to purchase it. 5 Stars for those prior reviews.

The machine is amazing
5/5

I have just begun using it and so far I am totally happy with My old machine did not sew thicker seams well at all. This machine does a great job. The fact that it is relatively lightweight is also a plus. A user can also easily learn how to use the program. I have updated. I am really pleased with how well the machine sews tapestry fabric and quilted fabric. Thus far, it has been superior to what I have used for more than 30 years with my Bernina sewing machine. In addition, I like that the machine is lightweight enough to be moved easily without causing strain on.

More than a 4452, in my opinion
5/5

The Singer 4452 can be compared to this unit. There is a significant difference in the build quality, and the pedal is much easier to When you choose the Brother, you will get a lot more for a bit less.
