Hi David. I'm not sure how old the package is, but I've had it for a long time and my grandchildren love it; it's one of those 'toys' in my toybox that they keep returning to. It's not the one they choose as soon as they see it, as it was at first, but they enjoy mixing and matching their outfits. If they don't match, I act upset (of course, they know I'm acting and come back to show me what they did on purpose). That makes it a lot of fun. In any case, it's one of the toys I have on hand. My grandkids are now 6 and 8, and this Wooden Bear set has been in my possession for at least 5 years. I hope this has been of assistance.
Because each bear has only a head, upper and lower portions, expressions are actually more noticeable than body parts and clothing, as a previous responder pointed out. Unlike some of the other Melissa and Doug sets, this one isn't magnetic. They are both three years old and have just celebrated their birthdays. br>br>One thing we found annoying is that the pieces aren't interchangeable between bears, but there's no way to tell which one goes with which. They arrive in three separate sections of the bin, but that only lasts about 12 seconds before they're all piled together. br>br>I used paint markers to mark the backs of each piece - momma bear gets a red flower, papa bear gets a blue star, and baby bear gets a green heart. The puzzle base and box sections were then marked in the same way. br>br>This will make it easier for the kids to figure out which pieces go where and which bear goes with which piece. This is a super cute toy, and I would have given it five stars if it weren't for the fact that, unlike Mom and Kid Bear, Dad Bear only has three different facial expressions: tired, happy, and angry.
