You need only the marble that comes with it, you don't need to change it Kaleidoscopes have a different effect from those that I recall, but my grandson and all of us have been really impressed by the beauty of this one.
As you can see in the photo, there is only one marble (on one end of the tube). The other end (with a peek hole) is held up to your eye and the environment is "shifted". creates a crazy, wonderful, distorted view of what you are trying to look Although you can turn the tube, this is not the type of toy you would use.
