Questions & Answers
The voltage that is sent to the unit is controlled by DCC, which stands for digital command control. The standard DC engine, for example, moves in response to the variable voltage you choose, which is usually a dial. A DCC-equipped engine uses a constant voltage that is digitally delivered to the track, allowing the loco's DCC decoder to understand and decode the digital signal and respond appropriately. DC does not require any special setup; all it needs is a standard speed control and power source to function. Each engine must be equipped with a DCC control system in addition to a decoder. DC is usually simple to set up and inexpensive, whereas DCC can be quite costly due to the upfront costs of everything required. In the end, DCC provides the ability to control multiple locos and other electronics on the same track at the same time, as well as the added realism of sounds and ultra slow speeds that a standard DC setup would not allow.
Yes, it can be powered by DC.
It's in the cab with you.
Bachmann has two options for you. In both HO and N scales, there are four Berkshire locomotives. Neither is equipped with a sound system. Both DC and DCC control are supported by the DCC Sound Value equipped models. The voltage difference between the tracks in both control systems is typically 14 to 16 volts. DCC uses a square wave variable frequency alternating voltage while DC uses a fixed polarity variable voltage.
Selected User Reviews For Bachmann 2-8-4 Berkshire Steam Locomotive & Tender -- DCC Sound Value Equipped PERE MARQUETTE #1225 - HO Scale
I was pleasantly surprised by this Bachmann engine. I like Kato engines with ESU decoders, but Kato HO is expensive, and ESU decoders are difficult to program in JMRI natively. In any case, my expectations for this loco were low to begin with. This one was well-done by Bachmann. The design is attractive, the locomotive is well-balanced, and the sound produced by this decoder is excellent. JMRI made it very easy to change the configuration. This decoder doesn't have any start-up or braking sounds, but when you turn on the track, the engine will make a steam sound, and as you drive, the chuffing sound will gradually speed up or slow down to match the speed you're using. I like to run my dcc engines at very low speeds, and this one can run smoothly and slowly at 4, which is very slow. I'm sure with a little more fiddling in JMRI I'll be able to fine tune things even more, but don't expect the same level of granularity as an ESU decoder, but this pleasantly surprised me. The front and rear lights are an excellent addition. The only other thing I'm going to see if I can do in JMRI is slow down the chuffing frequency, as I believe it's set a little too fast, and it's also a little too loud, but I know some people like it that way. All of my volume settings have been reduced for me. I hope this information is useful; I would highly recommend it, and after purchasing it, I would consider purchasing more Bachmann engines in the future. In addition, I'm using DCC with an Arduino motor driver and a Raspberry Pi.
It performs admirably. It's designed for 22 curves, but it works perfectly on my 18s. With the DCC System, you can create amazing sound effects!.
The first two of the four that I received had parts that had fallen off during shipping and didn't work properly.
This train is absolutely incredible. It performs admirably and produces excellent sound.
This is an excellent steam. The attention to detail, the sound, and the functionality are all excellent.
Very good.
