Because we have an on-demand water heater, a traditional pause button on the shower was not an option because whenever the hot water flow is interrupted, the heater shuts down, and when the flow is resumed, there is a burst of cold water before the heater resumes producing hot water. We can reduce the flow by using this control. The minimum required to keep the heater on is 5 gallons per minute, which eliminates the cold water burst that would occur if the flow was completely stopped.
