Questions & Answers

Is the moen 1222hd a drop-in replacement for the 1222? Will this replace the plastic moen posi temp 1222 shower body that I have?

I tried the Home Depot replacement, which was all plastic and dripped as well. I ordered the Brass 1222HD from Amazon, which was the same one that was in the diverter at the time. There was no more drip after that. It was more expensive, but you didn't have a choice, and it should last another 20 years, just like the first one did.

Some online sources claim that the brass ones are more prone to mineral deposits and seizing; has anyone had any experience with this?

After only three years, the Nylon cartridge (which came with the shower) became extremely sticky with deposits. I'm replacing the nylon ones with these brass ones in the hopes of getting a little more life out of them.

Is the Moen 1222hd a heavy-duty commercial model? positemp one-duty brass shell- Is there a replacement for the 1222b handle tub and/or shower faucet cartridge?

1222 is the original equipment manufacturer part, 1222b is the standard replacement, and 1222hd is the commercial grade replacement, according to my research. These were installed to replace the oem plastic casing version, and they are fantastic. The casing is entirely made of metal, and it is significantly more substantial.

My Moen 1222 valve was not compatible with this
3/5

This brass version was too big for the space. I had to dash to Home Depot at the last minute to pick up a standard plastic cartridge that fit. br>br>I've also discovered the following since purchasing this: br>1) Plastic cartridges are often preferable for home use because mineral deposits can bind a brass cartridge to the valve housing, necessitating the use of special tools and a significant amount of effort to remove. Because the minerals do not adhere to the plastic cartridge, it can be removed using standard channel locks. br>2) Under normal home use conditions, the rubber gaskets will almost certainly outlast the plastic housing. Because the gaskets in the brass and plastic versions are the same, switching to brass does not lengthen the time between valve openings. br>3) If the cartridge's stem ever snaps off (which has happened to me before), removing a brass cartridge can be nearly impossible. If a plastic cartridge is damaged, a screw can be drilled into the plastic body and retrieved with a tool. br>4) Using the correct type of lubricant is the most important factor in reducing repair frequency. Home Depot was selling a "silicone" lubricant that wasn't actually safe for these gaskets, as I discovered. That's why my previous cartridge had to be replaced after only four years. br>br>In most cases, I would recommend getting a standard plastic 1222 cartridge and using only the lubricant that comes with it.

I'm still not convinced I got a genuine Moen part: I would have given this product a solid 5 stars if I had given it a rating in 2014
3/5

This was a high-profile case at the time. When I placed my order in 2016, I noticed that the quality had degraded a little, but the product still looked the same as it had before; It went in and out without a hitch, and it did what it was supposed to do. However, it did not last as long as it should have, and I had to replace it far sooner than I would have expected. "They can't all be great," I reasoned as I placed my final order on December 5th, 2017. This recent order may or may not have included a genuine Moen cartridge. The part's markings weren't the same as they had been previously. Furthermore, the instructions did not match the markings on the product; the markings were inconsistent with the genuine Moen part I replaced, and the hot and cold were reversed when installed as instructed (and in every other installation). Nonetheless, I persisted and was able to correct the problem so that it functioned properly. br>br>It worked fine for about 22 days before starting to leak. Now, on December 29th, 2017, it's leaking so badly that I'll have to replace it again less than a month after it was replaced. This is not typical of a Moen part, and I'm beginning to wonder if I'll have to go to my local plumbing supply to ensure I get a genuine Moen part. I'm disappointed and concerned that Amazon's vigilance in delivering only authentic products is slipping. br>br>Normally, I would contact Amazon customer service to request a replacement, but I didn't keep the packaging and figured it would be a waste of time; that was a mistake I will not repeat, and I will pay the price for my short-sightedness. If you decide to buy this part, keep the packaging so you don't end up in the same situation as me. Now I just have to decide whether I trust Amazon to deliver a genuine part or if I should go to the local plumbing supply (which is only open during regular business hours) instead.

Do it right the first time, and you'll never have to worry about it again
5/5

If your plastic Moen valve has given up the ghost, this brass-plated replacement is a great option. I never bought another full-bodied version after that. My wife and I own rental properties, and all of the shower/tub valves in each unit, as well as our own home, require the same replacement cartridge. I've replaced a dozen or more plastic 1222 valve cartridges, but never this brass-cased version. Yes, it is $10 more expensive than the plastic version, but what is the value of your time? Even if you manage to wear out this valve, the rebuild kit is only $11 at HD, saving you $40 on a new plastic valve that will fail again. To be honest, I'm disappointed that Moen produces the plastic cartridge versions; they only serve to tarnish the Moen brand.

The Moen Shower Cartridge was only good for a short time
5/5

My shower has a Moen single handle. The first shower cartridge began to leak after 20 years. I replaced the shower cartridge with a new one that I purchased from a plumbing store. Within three weeks, the shower fixture began to leak. Moen sent me a free Moen 1222B shower cartridge after I called them. After two weeks, the shower fixture with the new Moen 1222B cartridge began to leak. I ordered a Moen 1222HD commercial heavy-duty brass shower cartridge from the internet. The shower fixture began to leak again after about three weeks. I'm not sure if today's new shower cartridges are as well-made as the originals, but all of the ones I've purchased haven't lasted very long. I'm currently replacing the Moen shower fixture with a new one. br>br>UPDATEbr>I hired a plumber to investigate my shower leak. He measured the water pressure and discovered it to be over 100 psi. The pressure reducing valve as well as the pressure expansion tank were both replaced. The water pressure had returned to its normal level of 65 pounds per square inch. The water in the shower has stopped leaking. The leak was caused by the water pressure, not the shower cartridge. My star rating has been changed to five.
