Questions & Answers

I'm undecided about which one to buy: the 500 or the 700. Which one would I use more?

I thought the 700 would be ideal because I figured I'd only use the smallest bit on any small projects. I quickly realized I needed to go even smaller, so I spent a fair amount of money on a kit that allows you to use the 700 with the smaller 500 bits. But I got tired of switching it back and forth, so I bought the 500, and now I have both. If I had to start over, I would buy the 500. I believe I had the right idea at first, but it was backwards. On the 500, I can get away with using the largest size bit instead of the smallest size bit. Here's the deal: if you're making decks or other construction-related items, the 700 is the way to go. If you're making furniture or boxes, the 500 is the way to go. Even large furniture, such as beds, can be built with the 500 with ease. If you need more strength in a joint, you can always add more of the smaller tennons.

What is the smallest domino that can be used in this game?

I used the 4mm mortise bit and dominos from the Seneca Woodworking Small Mortise Kit for Festool Domino XL DF700. Because the pins on the 700 are 5mm, you'll have to make your own spacer. That means all of the great spacers on the Domino XL700 will only work with 5mm bits and up, but making your own spacer with 4mm is just as simple.

I'm constructing a fence and want to mortise the 4x4 posts so that rails can be installed between them. Will this tool be able to do so on a regular basis?

Throughout the day, the domino 700 will cut precise, repeatable mortises. I was impressed by the machine's inherent accuracy, and I recommend using Sipo tennon stock for outdoor projects because the materials are rot resistant. Best wishes to you. It's a fantastic piece of equipment.

What kind of cutter does the domino xl come with?

One 12mm Domino Cutter (Festool Part 497870) is included in the 574447 XL DF 700 Domino Joiner Set.

I can't believe I bought another Festool product, as I'm not a big fan of the company
4/5

I believe that the majority of their products are overrated and overpriced. The Domino is a one-of-a-kind case because Festool's patent isn't set to expire anytime soon, so there's no other brand to choose from. I finally gave in and purchased the DF 500, which has proven to be a valuable addition to the shop. I figured I might as well get the 700 since I had a bunch of exterior doors to build and this thing was a real time saver. It's no surprise, given the Domino's reputation for making precise cuts in a short amount of time. Festool's Domino connector system, which installs in a series of three domino mortises to create a really strong knock down furniture joint, was a real pleasant surprise for me. These things aren't anything like Ikea. They're ideal for large projects like bed frames and the like. br>br>If you want a more in-depth look at how the Domino works, there are plenty of reviews available. For most of us, the question is whether or not this device is worth the $1500 price tag, which does not include a complete set of cutters. By the time you invest in those, you'll be close to $2,000 in total. Festool is clearly targeting professional users with such a high price point. For production work, this tool will save enough time to justify the cost; however, for hobbyists, there are plenty of other joinery methods that will achieve similar results. It really comes down to how you like to spend your shop time: if you have a lot of free time and/or like to tinker, the Domino is probably not worth it because you can make your own jigs for a fraction of the price. However, a hobbyist who doesn't have as much free time in the shop may see the value in a tool that will help them get that project built faster. I believe that most hobbyists would be fine with the baby Domino, and it is a less painful purchase at about $500 less than the 700. You'll get a well-designed machine that appears to be well-built in either case.

This is an excellent tool for stock that is at least 3/4 inch thick
5/5

I own a number of Festool tools, including the following: Some have design flaws (notably the router, which I would not buy again), such as the large router, large circular saw, this Domino joiner, sander, vacuum, guide rails, clamps, and so on. ) ) I have a lot of high-quality tools (and they're all expensive), but this one is exceptional. Making deep, precise oblong holes in hardwood is not an easy task, but it accomplishes it with remarkable ease and precision. It can also work with softwood, but it's a lot easier. br>br>After much deliberation, I chose the larger Domino over the smaller Domino. I would still purchase the larger tool, despite the fact that I have never used the smaller one, so you should read reviews from others who have; however, it is critical to keep the Domino tool fixed; If you place the bit side-to-side, the mortise will be too small. The machine is only moved by a side churn buried deep in a hardwood hole. The large, sturdy Domino stands firm (there are no clamping provisions; In that way, it's more like a biscuit joiner), but the handles and balance are perfect; I'm 69 and have had hand surgeries, so I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to handle such a large machine, but I have had no problems. In fact, if you can clamp your work tightly enough, it might be easier than using a small machine. It's been great in every case so far, but I had to use a trick to get the depth (how far below the reference surface the mortise is cut) right when I used the 8mm cutter on thinner wood. ) Because the minimum depth setting is 10mm and you can't go any lower, I had to use a shim on top of the workpiece to achieve a shallower depth. br>br>You must purchase different size cutters separately, and I purchased bulk tenon stock and cut the lengths I required. br>br>For the first 60 years of my life, I could not have imagined being able to afford this beast, but it is a fantastic tool. Overkill, I believe, is encouraged by it:.

It'll completely change the game
5/5

It's pricey, to be sure, but it's Festool, and it's designed and built by employees who are paid far more for their expertise than the average Chinese-made tool. The workmanship is nearly flawless. My only gripe so far is that the height and angle adjustment knobs are made of plastic and appear to be prone to breaking. br>br>Once you've got this tool, it'll open your eyes to new ways to build common projects faster and more efficiently. The more money I spend on tools, the less money I make on my projects, I like to joke. True, I charge by the hour, but I'm hoping that my lower rates will result in more work!.

I just got it
5/5

I just received the product, which appears to be well-made, and with the Seneca adapter kit, I anticipate using it to make frames for dry erase boards, picture frames, and furniture. I'd like to make a coffee table, a bookcase, and a few other things. br>br>What concerns me is that the item does not come in a box, and I notice in unboxing videos that the units come with a tag attached as well as blue cellophane wrap on the bottom of the unit to prevent scratching. I returned the first item because it appeared to be used, and Amazon (which ships and sells the item) just sent a second unit with the same issue. There are no tags, no box, and no protective cellophane wrap. Is Amazon passing off refurbished or used equipment as new? I'm going to go check it out at a local store to see if the ones sold there work. If that's the case, Amazon will have this returned to them.
