I hope this has been of assistance. br>A jointer (or, in some cases, a jointer-like device) is a machine that joins two or more pieces of wood together. The fence is the only issue with the jointer; it's impossible to square it, and the only adjustment is a single screw, resulting in a lot of play. I used a machinist square and a digital square, and the best I could get was 91 on the feed side and 90 on the output side. 5 On the outfeed side, the cast iron one might be preferable.
It performs the functions of a standard jointer. It's incredible how well the dust is extracted. The adjustable base side creeps out of depth when using the machine, which is a huge no no; in the months I've had it, I still can't get the fence to a 90 degree angle; do yourself a favor and get a heavy iron fence unit; this is marginal junk at best. If precision isn't important to you, this is the machine for you!br>br>As always, I buy the products I review with my own money.
I usually like Wen products and have four others, but after the second use, the blade seized up, burned and destroyed the belt, and caught fire, causing some of the wiring insides to catch fire. I've always recommended Wen products to my friends, but after spending $250 and having it catch fire after the second use, there's no way I could recommend this Wen 6 inch Jointer.
When I first bought it, I had my doubts about it, and rightly so. It is reasonably priced, so you get what you pay for. For a beginner, however, it's a good machine. The fence arrived bent and twisted, but I had expected that based on the other reviews. As a result, the squareness is poor and unreliable. I had to construct my own fence from scraps of. I had some 25" steel on hand. It wasn't difficult, but I shouldn't have been forced to do it in the first place. The jointer's table top is made of aluminum, and grooves are beginning to form on it after a few hours or a few days of use. After about 30 minutes of use, I have to apply wax to polish it up, which is a pain. After about 20 minutes, it becomes hot to the touch. In Texas, I work in a garage, but it's November, so the heat from the outside isn't an issue. This is an excellent machine for beginners, but don't expect to keep it for very long.
First - You won't be able to make the fence square - Whatever you do, don't give up. During the first pass, it becomes misaligned. Second - On the second piece of maple, the blades began to chip. I can ignore bad blades and simply replace them with better - But what good is a fence if you can't square it? It was a complete squander of funds!.
After an hour of use, the jointer bearings seized up. Buy a reputable brand to avoid a headache.
It's impossible to match. No, it doesn't have the same solid feel as your grandfather's jointer. However, it is portable and simple to operate.
Great machine for the money; it makes smooth square cuts and does exactly what it should. The table adjustment isn't the best, and the short table makes jointing the edges of longer boards difficult. Overall, I think this is a good value for money option for occasional woodworking.
