The first one I used in some aluminum was a little off, but not bad, so I figured this set would be a good cheap backup set. I tried out two more today, and they were dreadful. When used in a drill press, it was extremely non-concentric and chattered a lot. Concentricity is defined as uniformity in relation to a central axis for those who are unfamiliar with the term. To put it another way, when the tool spins, the tool and all of its cutting surfaces maintain consistent contact with the workpiece, reducing chattering. I'm not going to try it in steel if it's this bad in aluminum. They'd probably work in wood, but if that's all you need, go for one of the really cheap sets. I don't think Irwin is a particularly good brand, but I had hoped for more. Perhaps I was just unlucky and received a bad set, but I'm not going to try again.
The performance was shockingly poor. The sloppiest countersink I've ever seen. Uneven and choppy terrain Rather than drilling a smooth recess for a screw, I cut chunks out of the wood. I'm astounded at how bad things have gotten.
Each time I used it, it broke the first time. These are terrible. It could work on styrofoam.
You may believe that all you need is a countersink with a bit in the middle, but I believe you are mistaken. These are particularly useful for enlarging existing holes and for starting holes that must be very shallow or very thin. There have been a thousand times when these have done the job while the other parts have failed. A set of these should be included in every toolkit. They work with aluminum, but too much of it can cause them to become dull. This is fantastic! My only gripe is that they are prone to being misplaced. LOL.
I'm a CNC machinist, and I deburr everything myself. In both aluminum and steel, these are completely useless. They were chatting like crazy, and I'd never seen a countersink as bad as this. I intend to return. Make sure you don't throw your money away.
In mild steel, it wasn't great, and it didn't make a round recess in wood.
My second attempt resulted in a purchase from one of the industry's most venerable names. In my grandfather's brace, I still use Irwin bits. From the turn of the century, an and-bit set. I bought a set of Chinese hex-drive tools a while back, and they've lasted me more than a lifetime. Amazon sells Amazon countersinks. They were a waste of time right out of the box. When purchasing Chinese, you will win some and lose some. I put up with them for a while before tossing the entire thing in the trash, where it belongs. Then I went to a brand I know, Irwin, and was pleasantly surprised to discover that they are still producing excellent drill bits. Irwin will get the job done in any situation!.
It was great for wood, but it didn't work on metal.
