Questions & Answers

I'm currently pursuing a degree in machining. I'm looking for drill bits. Is it capable of drilling?

It would not, in my opinion! These are primarily used as back planes in machine panels, but I also use them for body metal and sheet metal up to 1/4" in thickness. I don't think 1" would be an issue!

Is there a manual technique for using these on a drill press for aluminum (for example, I've seen forward/reverse tapping techniques)?

These taps are typically used in electrical work, such as quickly tapping electrical boxes. As a result, you shouldn't tap anything thicker than the pilot drill can go completely through; as a result, they're really not designed for hand tapping, but rather for power drilling.

Is this a United States-made set?

No, mine said "MADE IN CHINA" when I bought it last year.

Thank you, Max. What are those five empty pockets on the left side for?

I take a quarter of a pound. Due to heavy use, 20 every few months. I buy two replacements at a time and keep the extras on the left side, along with a flat, phillips, and a few nut drivers; having the extra bits in the same case is convenient and saves time.

I have never used a better tap set in my life
5/5

This is a fantastic set of tapping bits. It's incredibly long-lasting. I used it in a project where I needed to tap out a lot of structural columns in an old building with the 1/4-inch drill bit. There are 20 tapping bits in total. The columns were 1/4" thick in the middle, 3/8" thick in the middle, and 1/2" thick in the rest. This section breezed through them all without a hitch. Of course, I had to pre-drill the thicker ones with a 13/64 drillbit, but that's to be expected given that the tip on this only goes so far before the thread cutters kick in; as long as you use plenty of oil and reverse to break the chips a lot, this won't break. I'm amazed at how much better it worked than it was advertised to be. It claims to be able to handle 1/8" structural steel, but with a predrilled hole, it can handle up to 1/2"! I believe those who complained about it breaking were misusing it. It will break, just like any other tap, if you don't go in straight.

When you don't require indexed bits, taps, or countersinks, this combination set is ideal
4/5

These are what I've been using to drill and tap holes in mild steel plates for electrical distribution boxes that I'm not using for circuit breakers. This has necessitated the use of a middle-of-the-road strategy The following is a list of the taps that are available: 10- 24, 10- 32 and 12 are two different numbers. The others will be useful in the future, and I'm going to buy the next two sizes to add to this case. Using a power driver (Milwaukee 12v lithium) and cutting fluid, I was able to get through the mild steel in a reasonable amount of time. Threading with a power driver requires a lot of patience and a little skill, and I recommend practicing on scrap metal first because a driver can easily strip out threads. In fact, after drilling the initial hole (stopping about 1/3 of the way up where the first threads appear on the bit), I switched to a ratcheting hand driver that accepts hex bits and then hand tapping. For me, hand tapping once through is more reliable, especially when using cutting fluid and cleaning after each hole with a phosphor-based cleaner. Using a bronze brush to remove material from the threads, I was able to quickly drill and tap a dozen threaded holes in a fraction of the time it would have taken me to do it separately (although the tapping was done with a cheap, low-quality tap). end of a series of taps that saw the target ones I use the most no longer being able to do much). Patience and being aware of the state of the threading, backing out when necessary to clean the bit, and then slowly going back in to finish the job is something I'm used to, and having these taps on a hex bit has been extremely beneficial. br>br>I haven't found this set to be any more brittle than single taps, and it appears to last a little longer than the cheap blue box set I bought for the occasional job. Even after cleaning the threads of the tap and tapped hole, the first screw in seems to pick up a few more particulates than I'd like: some fine particles aren't being removed well. The actual holes are a little loose, but given the application on relatively thin plate and sheet steel, this isn't a big deal because the threads just need to hold and they do just fine. br>br>PROsbr>- For electricians, a good selection of taps is available. br>- Use cutting fluid and a good cutting rate for the drill section. br>- Nice taps, and remember to use moderate force and back out to keep the threads clean. br>br>CONsbr>- It is admittedly a little pricey, which is why it only gets one star. br>- Cleaning threaded holes with a good nylon tube brush is recommended, as fine particles can be left behind. br>br>Overall, a good set of combination drill/tap/countersinks. If you already have a good tap set, you won't need these unless you want to throw them in a toolbox and take them out on a job for quick threading. If you only need to drill a few holes for electrical work or simply need to get something in place and don't have access to a full set of indexed drill bits and taps, this set is ideal. It's well worth purchasing! However, the metric set is out of my price range, so I'll have to do it piecemeal for a while longer.

Surprisingly good, in my opinion
4/5

Case is excellent. Glass fences and railings require drilling and tapping into stainless steel posts. br>We were blown away by how well this product performed. We put it to the test drilling 1/8" thick round stainless posts, and it worked perfectly. Drilling and tapping are a lot more difficult. br>We also had success with a spray drill/tap lubricant foam. br>I'm not sure how long each tap will last; we'll have to wait and see.

When you tap on the angle iron, it breaks! Drill No
3/5

6 When trying to tap a hole in an angle iron that was 1/8 inch thick, the 32 tap broke. To reduce friction and keep the bit cool, I even used metal cutting fluid. However, it was ineffective. The drill bit broke after 4 or 5 seconds of drilling. Very let down. I would not recommend this product to potential buyers.

It works great, but unless you're working with thin metal, I recommend predrilling
5/5

It works great, but with thicker metal, don't try to drill, tap, and countersink all at once. That is nothing more than a pipe dream. The drill tip, on the other hand, is fantastic for aligning the bit. To make the process go more smoothly, I predrilled appropriate sized holes. Any tap will snap off if you twist it on a smaller bit. It's an art and a skill to tap holes. If you're a beginner, you'll have to learn regardless of which brand you buy.

Case with shoddy construction! This is not appropriate for a construction site! Case popped right out of the box! I'd suggest getting a Klein set for the price
3/5

This case was made for a very low price. I don't think it's a good idea. The piece can be reattached, but it comes off very easily over time. over. If I don't properly store my tool, I'm likely to lose it or drop it while on the job. At this price point, the storage case was a major turnoff for me. Klein has a good quality set for under $30 that has a few fewer bits but is of higher overall quality.

It was not a good investment
3/5

It would have been a fantastic tool if the product had performed as expected. Three of the bits were tightly broken away. On the first pass, the smallest of them broke. The next person in line drilled/taped one hole and broke on the second. After that, the next size followed suit. The money spent was not well spent. I was also drilling and tapping 1/8-inch-thick tubing. I was lubricating and moving slowly.

The packaging is very nice
3/5

The end. This is one of the tools I purchased quite some time ago: simply to have it on hand when the time comes Today was the day, and the first use of it shattered it. I was skeptical of the "drill, tap, and deburr in one operation" claim, so I did some preliminary research. To be safe, I drilled the hole (which wasn't safe). It might work with sheetmetal, but it didn't work for me. The packaging has been given an extra star.
