Questions & Answers

What country does this product come from?

There's no information on the label about where they're made, just "HSS 1 - The tools themselves receive a score of five out of ten. But in my lathe or drill press, they're fantastic.

What is the shank diameter for those of us who work with collets and vertical mills?

7/16", 5/16", 4/16", 3/16", and 2/16" are the diameters of the shanks. The shanks have labels that say 5HSS, 4HSS, 3HSS, 2HSS, and 1HSS, which I have no idea what they mean. Because the shanks do not have diameter labels, I had to use a metal ruler to measure them. I hope this has been of assistance.

Alex c. Why would I buy something only to find out it doesn't fit a standard collet after measuring it?

The majority of people use them in a morse taper drill chuck. On your lathe, you've replaced the fixed center.

What is the diameter of a collet for those of us who use vertical mills and collets?

I used these in a couple of classes where we had to use different diameter collets for different sized bits on the milling machine. It served my purposes well, but they are now in storage, and I am unable to comment.

It went BINK, BINK, BINK, BINK, Mild steel shattered the 1/4"
3/5

Now, I'm sure you're thinking that this guy is an idiot who did something stupid. That's all right. However, because it was made of mild steel, the tip snapped off easily. Bink. It was as simple as that. Yes, I used cutting lube and drilled straight (on the mill, using the precise little handwheel rather than the handles). Perhaps just a smidgeon of a problem. The rest are fine, but I haven't used them in steel since then, only in aluminum. So there you have it. br>br>I don't consider myself to be a complete moron, but who does? When I read a review and see that someone claims to have broken a tool, I immediately think to myself, "Well, I know who the tool was," and dismiss the reviewer as a moron. Every story has two sides, and these bits, thankfully, have two sides as well. So, with a quick flip, new holes appeared. I gave you three stars because I had to buy a new center drill.

Dullsville is a small town with a population of only five people
3/5

About half of the cutting edges on the five center drills were visibly dull when this item arrived. This is most likely due to them bouncing around in the poorly designed package during shipping or being thrown into a bin with 500 other center drills at the manufacturing facility. I'm not concerned about the cause, but if the vendor who packages these is reading this, they might be able to reduce the number of returns if they used a piece of foam large enough to keep the individual center drills in their respective partitions (inside the plastic container).

Junk
3/5

In mild 12 gauge steel, I drilled ONE pilot hole, and the bit was dull and rounded over - I used high-quality drilling oil as well. I suppose I can use them for softer metals if I don't send them back. It bites in and tells me that these are junk quality and not real tool steel when I use a standard file on them.

Frozen butter was impossible to cut through
3/5

After reading the reviews, I decided that this would be a good set to have for the time being. It was a complete waste of money, and the reviews must have been written by people who were paid to change their opinions. I've previously purchased from this company, and the products are generally of good quality for the price. But this is not one of them; in my opinion, you would be wasting your time if you bought something else. br>br>At first, I assumed it was me and how I set it up; however, mistakes do happen. I tried another bit and got the same result. So I switched to a different brand that I had on hand, and it performed admirably. As a result, this isn't a case of human error. The bits don't appear to have been sharpened before they left the factory, based on their appearance. Seriously, the QC guy must have been sleeping because I was able to get them to bite into aluminum without having to use a different bit to start a hole. br>br>Final Thoughts- Returning them is a waste of time, money, and effort. I'll probably sharpen them when I'm bored one day. Maybe that's all there is to it. br>br> It's a do-it-yourself project, so don't expect anything fancy. However, you should seriously consider going somewhere else.

These get the job done - However, this is a temporary position
5/5

If you want to display your work in a dead/live center (hence the 60 degrees), this is the place to be. So far, I've only used them on brass and aluminum, but they appear to cut well. When drilling holes, I prefer to use a spot drill. A spot drill with a wider angle than the drill bit helps to keep the drill more centered. Because most drill bits have a wider angle than 60 degrees, using these center drills to start holes may cause your bit to deflect.

However, I use mine on my wood lathe to center the holes before drilling
4/5

These are most likely intended for metal lathes, but I use mine on my wood lathe to center the holes for subsequent drilling. I know it's overkill, but I only get wobbly bore jobs once in a blue moon.

This is an excellent tool for drilling precise holes
4/5

Great for drilling precision holes, but be careful with the smaller ones because the tip is easily snapped off. I know, it's user error; use light pressure and move slowly.
