Questions & Answers
There is only one because it is a cylindrical bearing rather than a ball bearing. I use it frequently and find it to be effective for the purpose for which it was created:
The bearings are housed in the bulky part. The threads rotate at their own pace. The tailstock has a taper attached to it.
It sounds like you have a bad bearing or a bad morse taper fit (you're using a 2 when you only need one morse taper). Such a sound should not be produced by applying pressure to the tailstock at 180 or 90 degrees. Request that the defective tailstock be replaced by the supplier.

If you're looking for a way to center two pieces before gluing them together, this is a great option. br>Use it to center the top and bottom halves of bowls, or use Cole jaws on a second chuck to glue and center segmented rings. It's nice to be able to work on two separate pieces on two separate chucks, face them off, then glue them together and be centered! br>The bad news! You can't use this with two chucks holding the work piece and running the lathe because it's unbalanced and wobbles a lot! I had hoped to be able to use two chucks to hold both ends of a work piece for larger pieces, and have that extra strength and security, but that is not going to happen! br>It's great if you're just using it to center two pieces, which is a blessing in and of itself, or if you're using it to center and cut tenons, then mounting a second chuck to turn the piece around and work, then it's great! br>However, don't use it while the lathe is running!.
The bearings are held in place by this ring, which also holds the unit together. That ring was returned ten days after the return window had closed. I would have been shut down if it hadn't been for the fact that I had a complete machine shop with every tool known to man. I was able to put it back together again. br>br>PSI has let me down. I had hoped for a lot more from them.
I bought this to mount a chuck to exact center before turning the bowl to do the inside work; it does the job, so I'll keep it; however, when the lathe is running, there is a lot of wobble, as if it is out of balance. Yes, my tailstock is centered and aligned.
This is a neat little device for installing a chuck on your tail stock. This is how I turned thin balusters. By using chucks to grip two ends of the baluster, you can effectively increase its stiffness to a 1/4-length baluster. Without the steady rest, you can almost turn the balusters, though the Steady adds to the rigidity. br>br> I put a NOVA MIDI CHUCK on it, and it's been working fine for me. One significant advantage is that I do not need to center drill my wood for a live center. It appears to be on par with any live center in terms of quality. br>br> There is a small amount of visible run out in my setup, perhaps 0. Because I haven't had the need to investigate it, I'm not sure if it was the chuck or the adapter. For woodworking, it's more than adequate. Although it will fit into the tail stock of a metal lathe, is it accurate enough for you? There's also a nut that holds the bearing in place, which I had to tighten. We'll keep an eye on this to see if it's still an issue. Because of those two issues, I deducted a star. br>br>Overall Impression - I would buy it again because it is a good value for the money.
PSI products have exceeded my expectations in terms of performance and cost, but there is no customer service.
For use on a wood lathe, this is a very reasonable price. I use it frequently when gluing with my Cole jaws to ensure that the glue job is entered correctly.
