RPMs in the high range will cause the cheap knockoffs to self-destruct and spray pieces in all directions. Aluminum engine parts with machine surfaces are not subjected to these treatments.
In addition to using these pads to clean heavy steel surfaces, we prefer using them to clean large flanges / silicones such as differentials, axle housings, and other heavy steel You'd be wise to be cautious when it comes to aluminum type since it's aggressive, but if you're not a die grinder knucklehead, it will work.
Scotch whisky is my favorite Having never been a big fan of Brite discs (other than for their high price), I can only speculate how durable they might be. In conjunction with a small, high-definition screen A speed tool (as they're designed to be) does a wonderful job of cleaning the surface, but a very short lifespan is unfortunately the cost. As I found, high speed does degrade or melt the abrasive "curls" fairly fast, but if you know that going in (as I did), buying the large box is a reasonable decision. It's not that they don't do a great job cleaning surfaces, but their lifespan is very short.
Once i opened the box, I realized that I had ordered the 3" backing pad, now I need to place an order for the proper backing pad. I feel dumb!.
Since I have had my die grinder for many years, I have been using Scotch Brite Roloc pads. The job of polishing and cleaning is a lot simpler now. I haven't been able to find a warehouse in my area since I moved. My delight was heightened when I discovered Amazon had the discs for sale. There are no knock-off brands that can compare to Scotch Brite. Blue, maroon, and silver are my favorites in both the 2" and 3" sizes. As well as using the Arbor mount pads, I'm able to fit inside crevasses and tight spaces. The work is easier no matter what the task is, be it removing oxidation or just polishing.
It is a great product and I would buy it again.
It's too late for me to say how much I wish I had discovered these earlier. The metal is not so deeply scarred by the removal of the surface material. I will buy from them.
