Questions & Answers

Is this suitable for sanding a tabletop?

The short answer is: yes. br>Longer version: Get a new iron if you haven't done so already. I purchased a Hock iron and a cap. This bad boy was transformed into a great finishing plane with the help of an iron set. br>The iron that comes with the package is far too soft. Unless I was working on soft wood, the edge would curl up even after diligently sharpening and lapping the iron.

Is there a lever on the Lever Cap, or is it just a screw? According to some online reviews, it has a screw rather than a lever. ?

The lever is held in place by a screw. It was advertised as having a lever, but when I opened it two years ago, I discovered it did not have one. In either case, it performs as expected.

Is there an adjustment screw in the frog, or are there only two vertical mounting screws behind the plane iron?

Behind the iron is a pair of vertical mounting screws.

Is it possible to flatten boards with this jack plane?

It's a jack plane, to be precise. And that's precisely what it's for. A smoothing plane (approximately 9" long) has been used to finish the surface.

This turd isn't going to shine
3/5

Look, we both know you're interested in this plane because it's inexpensive, and you don't want to spend $200 on a decent plane. This isn't your plane, I can assure you. If you can't afford a new one, buy a used one and fix it up. Take it from me: I went down with you. Simply take a step back. br>br>When I first opened the box, I noticed that the plane blade, as well as the lateral adjustment lever, were bent upward on the back side. The blade's back end sits 5/16" off the work surface when laid flat on my bench. I bent the blade back into shape by hand - The lateral adjustment lever was the same, though it had that sudden give that metal has right before it snaps when you hit the mechanical fatigue point. The body's paint was peeling away. Nickle- On either side of the mouth, there are paint spots missing (I'm guessing it was put together before the paint dried and was smeared off). The chip breaker has almost no camber where it meets the blade, and the edge is rounded, causing shavings to jam in the chip breaker, effectively killing you. I'd have to grind away the entire camber to remove the amount of metal required to create a sharp mating surface. I'll probably heat and bend a new camber on the chip breaker after that. Wow. The locating slot on the chip breaker is also cut too far up, so it rests too far down on the frog, causing the blade to protrude through the mouth if I have it more than about 1mm from the edge of the blade, even when the adjust knob is screwed all the way in. The edge of the blade was square and well-ground. Because the metal is so soft, it only took a short time to sharpen. I could see the glint of the edge curled up when it hit the 1/2" edge grain of a pine board for the first time. br>br>For $45 including shipping, I recommend looking into purchasing an old plane on eBay. You'll spend just as much time restoring a used plane as you will tuning this POS, and the used plane will be made of higher-quality materials.

You must be willing to learn new things

To begin with, calling this a "smoothing plane" is a little misleading, because it has more in common with a No. 1/2 Jack Plane is ideal for planing down a large amount of wood in a short amount of time. br>br>Second, the iron and chip-resistant materials. The breaker is a huge letdown. It was my first "serious" bench plane when I first bought it, as I was attempting to teach myself woodworking and relying heavily on books and YouTube videos. After using it for a while, it finally dawned on me how to use a bench plane - especially when compared to what can be done with power tools such as a jointer and planer - I quickly lost interest. br>br>One of my sources of information was Ron Hock's book "The Perfect Edge," and I came up with the idea of buying a Hock iron and chipbreaker to go with it. And, with apologies to Mr. Frost, that has been the deciding factor. br>br>Since then, I've bought a Lie-Detective System. Low-Nielsen This Grizzly plane with the Hock iron and 'breaker has become a real workhorse for the main task of hand-smoothing the very delicate and rare hardwoods that I'm working with now, despite my concentration on lutherie. I keep the iron sharp and the plane tuned (to the best of my ability), and it's turned into a fantastic tool. br>br>Even with the upgrade, the total cost is roughly half that of a comparable Veritas or Lie- detector. This is a Nielsen tool. It's what I'd refer to as a good deal.

An excellent place to start
4/5

I built a scrub plane using this plane as a foundation. The plane arrived on time for an off-site meeting. a $40 plane from the beach Everything appeared to be in good condition and could be used. The fit and finish ranged from a little rough to a little better. The majority of the cast was adequate. It was relatively flat, and the adjuster and mechanism worked smoothly enough to tune into better working condition. The handle, on the other hand, is a major issue. It's too short; however, if you have small hands, you'll be fine. However, if you're used to the size of Stanley handles, you'll notice that this one is an inch too short, so I made a new one using a pattern from my Stanley 4. When that is added, the Grizzly transforms into a nice 14-inch scrub plane. br>br>The blade is categorized as serviceable. You'll have to put in some effort to get it and the chip breaker to work properly. Spend more time cleaning up the stamping marks and scratches if you want those parts to look nice with clean holes and edges as well. br>br>If you're looking for a 14" 5, this appears to be the only option on Amazon. It's acceptable for the money. I don't believe there is a third option. br>br>If you can live with a 4, the Stanley Sweetheart is an excellent investment at $80. If you need a 14" body to make a really nice scrub plane, this one is a good place to start.

It's a good plane for the money, and the plane itself isn't bad
4/5

I was able to flatten the sole to my satisfaction, and once I got the blade initialized and sharpened, it worked perfectly. The first job was flattening a workbench top, which required a significant amount of effort. For that, a 14-inch plane is preferable to my number 4. The only criticism I have of the tool is that the item I received did not match the description. It's a screw, not a clip, that secures the lever cap. Furthermore, the chipbreaker screw cannot be driven with the hold down. Having another tool to remove the blade from the sharpening process is inconvenient. Aside from that, it's a good plane that can handle any general leveling or smoothing task I throw at it.

Thank you for your help, Grizzly! Please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please Both as a source of income and as a hobby, I'm a growing woodworker

for private use only This plane, at this price, is a godsend for us as we try to get our business off the ground. It was purchased with the intention of being flattened. Glued-up panels that are too wide to pass through my thickness planer are smoothed out. You'll have to clean it of the oil. The iron should then be sharpened (I use a Grizzly oil stone/honing jig kit). Watch a couple of videos on how to set up a handplane on YouTube. I was scrolling nicely within an hour. A nice panel was present. Don't give up because there is a learning curve. It takes time, but Grizzly products have always met my expectations.
