Questions & Answers

What is the size of the blade that comes with this plane?

A 2" wide blade is used to cut with the H7569 10 Inch Smoothing Plane.

Is the frog a Bedrock or a Bailey?

A bedrock style frog is included with the H7569 10" Smoothing Plane.

Is it possible to replace the blade with a thicker one? Is there a particular blade style to request if that's the case?

Yes, a thicker blade is an option. It has plenty of space in his mouth. Although I'm not sure where you got the thicker blade, it's still a standard 2" plane blade.

The listing specifies that the sole is serrated, but users have reported that the sole is flat. Is it one of these?

The sole of the H7569 10" Smoothing Plane is flat. A serrated sole is available on two of our models, the H7565 and H7568.

Selected User Reviews For Grizzly Industrial H7569-10" Smoothing Plane

a number four I suppose it's a result of my own compulsion
3/5

I was in charge of the monster (22" x 22" x 22" x 22" x 22 I got the 14" (number 7) and the 7" (number 7). no. 5 - I didn't like the fact that my no. 4 jack didn't match, so I looked for a comparable Grizzly and ordered one as soon as it became available. Grizzly planes suffer from a few minor flaws - Blades are too thin (get a replacement while you're at it, then use the thin one to make a scraper or something else) and don't fit in the mouth perfectly. Also, the back handle is almost always too small for the screw (tighten it up by filing a bit off the end of the screw and cleaning it up with a thread die). They're certainly attractive, and the scrubbing wood is made of hard iron - For the past 3000 years, no other worker has performed better. They are a joy at the end of the day. br>I now have a no4 Jack, a no5 Smoother, and a no7 Jointer that are all the same size - for the same price as a single Lee- Verita jack plane is a plane made by Verita. I don't have anything negative to say! That is not the case with my SB4. That will be used as a scrub plane. br>Hey, I'm a happy guy. However, because of the handle and the less-than-ideal lighting, you only get three stars. than- The blade fits perfectly in the mouth. br>br>If you don't mind tuning your plane (and if you don't, you shouldn't be buying planes), then these prices will suit you. Oh, Grizzly, calling every plane you build a "smoothing plane" is odd - Whatever anyone says, that's a Joiner, especially when it's 22" long!

The low-quality blade that comes with it renders this useless
3/5

Without a little work, the handle will not sit squarely or tightly. The bottom of the shoe was perfectly flat. Because it is not a cam lock and there is so much play in the adjustment, it is a pain to set up. All of this, however, is completely understandable. This garbage blade is what gets to me. To begin with, it was riddled with dings and scratches. Ok. There's no need to be concerned. I anticipated having to square, flatten, sharpen, and so on, but getting it square and flat took hours. Sharpened to a 25-degree bevel, with a secondary bevel of 30 degrees. Leather was stropped with 4 microns and then 1 micron. Sharp as a razor. In the plane, place the blade. Getting the blade adjusted to the proper height was once again a complete pain. Make the necessary adjustments. On some nice soft red cedar, put it to the test. The first couple of shaves were lovely and silky. They became more rough after about ten minutes. The stropping polish was gone from the blade edge when I looked at it. I tried it on a soft 1x6 white pine board with the grain running through it. Almost immediately, the edge of the paper folded over. So I reasoned that this must be a problem with the head treat. As a result, I heated the edge and performed an oil edge quench. I didn't do anything to make it harder. I tried sharpening it once more. It came out very well. The angles are the same. The edge of the pine immediately folded over. Mild steel is used for the blade.

The blade is completely blunt, and the planer appears to have been used, so I'm disappointed
3/5

I bought this based on a youtube review and had high expectations; however, when I opened the box, the planer was filthy and appeared to have been used. The blade is completely blunt and will not cut through anything; it also appears to have been used and is filthy. br>I decided to keep it and restore it as a learning experience; the plane is solid and looks and feels nice after some cleaning; I'm still waiting for a sharpening kit before I can work on the blade; I tried some prepping; the base was fairly flat and after some sanding, I got it nice and flat. I'm hoping to get the blade properly set up and sharpened, but this will be the last budget plane I buy. Even for the price, it's really disappointing that Grizzly would send out a product in such poor condition.

This isn't a high-end plane, but that's not what I was looking for; I just wanted a good user plane! For what you'll get, the price is fantastic
5/5

This plane was actually better than I expected for the price. br>However, it will serve as a good user plane in the end! With a little tweaking, this will serve me well. br>I noticed right away that the sides and sole of this plane would need to be lapped to remove the rough sanding marks left by the manufacturer. It's not a big deal. The sole and sides are square, which isn't important unless I'm going to use this plane as a shooting board, and the blade needs to be fine-sharpened (just in case). Any other flaws I discover will be addressed simultaneously.

For a low-cost plane, the quality is fantastic
5/5

This aircraft is incredible! I'm amazed at how affordable it is. br>br>It's very well made; it's flat and square out of the box, and it's quite sharp. Except for sharpening it to my liking, I didn't have to spend any time getting it ready. Unlike the plastic molded handles found on other planes in this price range, the wooden handles are fantastic and extremely comfortable. br>br>It has a lot of adjustability. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the frog can also be adjusted (or replaced, if you prefer)! The adjustment screw is fantastic, and with a little wax on it, it turns like a dream. br>br>My only criticism of the product is that the cutting iron is a little soft, but I suppose you can't have everything for $30, and the iron is fairly easy to replace with a higher quality one.

Solid feel, smooth glide, and (after a little tweaking) awesomeness
5/5

Love. Love. Love. Love. This is the aircraft. I can't afford the *high end* stuff, but this plane shaves like a champ with a little tweaking (there are videos on YouTube for it). It feels good, works well, and is comparable to one of my Kannas. I'm a little biased because I own and adore some of my other grizzly collectibles. However, for the money (and with a little tweaking), this plane is fantastic.

This is not a beginner's game
3/5

Bottom line: don't buy this plane if you don't know how to restore an old plane. The Pros: br>br>The Pros: br>br>The Pros: br>b I really like the plane's size and weight. The handles are comfortable to hold, and the depth adjuster is simple to reach and operate. The sole was completely flat right out of the box. The disadvantages: br>br> The blade is thin and not even close to being flat. I gave up after 20 minutes of sanding with 120 grit sandpaper. Keep it on hand in case of an emergency, but you'll want to invest in a replacement. br>br>On the frog and blade cap, the milling is very rough, and it looks like rough casted aluminum (it isn't, but it gives you an idea). br>br>The plane works for me, but I've worked on older aircraft before. If you don't have one, try a stanley or a woodriver. The money is well spent, and you will gain a better understanding of what a plane should look like and feel like. Then you can add these less expensive planes to your arsenal and customize them to your specifications.
