Bastard (coarse), Second (medium), and Smooth (fine) are the ratings for these American Pattern files. The cut on this set is Bastard (coarse), which is coarser than a Swiss 00. These are designed to remove material quickly (as far as files go) and will not leave a fine finish. When it comes to finishing, these are usually followed up with a finer grade file to remove any surface scratches. This is the best set of files I've ever seen, though I have plenty more that are finer and smaller.
Germany. They're also very sharp.

This is an excellent collection of German-language books. Bastard (coarse) cut made with hand files When you only need to remove a small amount of material and don't care about the finish, these are ideal. Normally, you would do as follows: When a fine surface finish is desired, fine-tune the rougher work you did with these with a smooth (fine) cut file. br>br>I've never seen anything better for this purpose than the divided storage pouch. You don't want these rattling around in your toolbox unprotected, so a storage pouch is essential. Impact with other hardened steel items (such as other files) will dull them and may chip the teeth, which are very hard (and thus brittle). Making your own storage solution is more time-consuming than it may appear, so having an excellent solution included in the package significantly increases the appeal of this set. br>br>These come with some of the best handles I've ever seen. A file should never be used without a handle, as you will quickly discover if you make that mistake. Another challenge is finding handles that fit perfectly. All of these grips are extremely comfortable and durable. They appear to be custom fit to each file, which adds to the value by saving time. br>br>One of the few tools I keep on my metalworking bench at all times is a small collection of files. I frequently use them for deburring and other manual finishing operations that are left behind by machine operations. Those files are usually smooth cut, whereas this set is better for removing heavier stock, but my files are still some of my most valuable and frequently used tools. br>br>I think it's well worth the extra money to buy high-quality products. files of high quality Sharpness, uniformity, and longevity all contribute to that being a wise purchasing decision, at least for me; a high-quality file provides satisfying service for a long time, whereas Chinesium files, in my experience, are a disappointment throughout their short service life. I've got a lot of Chinese-language books. In my shop, I've created effective tools; Files, on the other hand, aren't among them. br>br>In general, I think this set is a good buy.
I've been using files almost every day for over 50 years as a metal sculptor. I usually just used whatever was lying around the studio, the majority of which were no longer usable. I did some research and discovered that file brands do differ in quality. There were a few recommended brands to choose from, but I decided to go with Pferd and am glad I did. I bought three sets, which is probably more than I need, but when I need to file cut steel, I know I have the best tools for the job.
The packaging is terrible, which is why I docked a star. In the packaging, the files were extremely disorganized. So much so that one of the files now has a dent on the edge from rubbing against each other in the truck. It's not the end of the world, but at this price point, the packaging should be of German quality rather than Chinese. It is not worth returning, but you would not have bought these if you saw them on a store shelf.
br>br>These aren't fine-finish files; they're more likely to be used for shaping 1/8" or thicker material. It would be impossible to make this work with 1/16" material; You'd need a finer tooth for this. br>br>These are an excellent choice if you need to remove a large amount of material quickly.
It's a bit pricey, but if you're constantly filing into thick metal prices, it'll be well worth it. I would, but due to the fact that they had me in the filing room for about an hour, I wouldn't.
This is fantastic. I've never had files this nice before; when I got these, I made some curved-edge brackets, and the files all cut beautifully and precisely where I placed them. The handles are excellent and make it simple to control the files. I'm not sure what I'll do with these brackets because I don't think I'll need them right now.
They appealed to me in every way. I had forgotten how beneficial a good set of files can be. Purchase the best possible items and look after them.
