Questions & Answers

What is the maximum thickness of this cutter? Will it cut ?

An electric bolt cutter is what I would use. The cable comes in a variety of sizes, but I would get at least an 18"

A reamer is included with this cable cutter to open and clean up brake cables once they've been cut. ?

Using this cutter, you do not need a reamer. Cutting is neat, clean, and sharp, making it the best on the market. You can reliably use it for years just by making sure it never gets used for anything else.

Rather than cutting brake hose, you could cut hydraulic hoses ?

Although it should cut through it, you should not use it for that purpose. If you want to clamp hydraulic hose, you need a sharp blade and a plastic clamp

This can cut 7x19 steel rope cables at 2mm, but is it capable of cutting 5x17 steel rope cables at ?

It never occurred to me to try it, but I can't see any reason not to try it. The cables I use most often are 1x7, 1x19, 1x31 (and on occasion, 7x19, although I don't recall running into it). They are all at There is also compression of 6mm (I think) In all, there are 20 strands in a less housing, and the cutters easily cut through all of them. It is only 2mm bigger than a cable, so despite being rope (instead of a cable), it shouldn't be a problem. It sounds like a good plan to me.

I have found the Park Tool Cable cutters to be well made and comfortable to hold. However, when it comes to performance, they have been much different. A few times I cut stainless control cable with the cutter one afternoon and found that it wouldn't cut without leaving several strands twisted and uncut. It would not cut cleanly and I had to use the cutter I had purchased. With this tool, the cutters were tightened, the pivot was lubricated, and I still wasn't able to make a clean cut. I was so frustrated and disgusted that I just threw the Park Tool Cutters in the garbage and did not bother returning the inferior offshore products Do not buy the inferior Chinese made Park Tools, spend the extra cash on Swiss quality Felco cutters, you won't be disappointed and will have a tool that performs without issues. I am extremely satisfied with the results from this Swiss made cable cutter (model C7).

A cleaner cut is not found on this one
3/5

It is just as good as cutting pliers, which you probably already have. It is described as "clean cut", but it is not. Even worse, considering their price, I found myself using proper cutting pliers and a file to finish off the cuts on Shimano brake cables. Everything was messed up, starting with the spiral-shaped metal housing that bent and ending with the outer plastic and rubber The cable cutting tools use scissors design with offset blades that bend the cable first, rather than cutting it. I'm no bike expert and not sure how a professional cable cutting tool should look like, but these simply bend the cable first instead of cutting it. The following instructions apply if you are using regular cutters There will be some squeezing of the cable before cutting it, which might not be so good, but is certainly no worse. In reality, I find that brake cable is cut by pliers long before it experiences any deformation, and you can get middle of the road quality made in the USA cutting pliers for half.

This book is worth the read
5/5

It is Park Tool that proves its usefulness once again. For many bike repair tools, I chose to go with the budget option made by the company with the odd name from the out of the way name. There were just a few places where the tool worked. When cutting bike cables and housing, you need a clean cut because anything less results in wire shards on your floor which I have stepped on several times (god, that hurts) or a cable that is too short because you had to recut it more than once. The money needs to be spent. Their higher price is not arbitrary. Park knows what they're doing and the prices are not determined by surprise. It is absolutely true that what you pay for is what you get.

Cable is good, but housing is not so good
3/5

There are Park tools that are still in good shape after 30 years while the newer stuff is not nearly Cutters, I'm ready. Generally, I use them to cut cable, and they cut a clean end that does not fray. Their cuts are not so good at cutting housing, causing them to often leave sharp edges or deform By inserting an old piece of cable into the housing before you cut, you will keep the shape of the housing intact. Even so, it usually takes two or more steps to complete. It takes me 3 cuts to get an acceptable one that is clean enough to finish with a file. Instead of starting with a housing that is too short, I always begin with one that is too long. When a Dremel tool with a cut-off disk is used, the results are usually better.

A metal housing is crushed in the process
3/5

In what sense is it useful? So that I would be able to cut brake cable housing without crushing the inner metal housing, I bought this. Since the set was quality, I figured it would do the job well in the long run. I bought these cable cutters, but I have to say that they crush the housing, which means your brake cable gets caught up in They are cable cutters, so I could be using them wrong. In fact, there is only one way to use them, so I'm not convinced. The center screw according to the instructions can't be adjusted as per the instructions because it always crushes the housing if I do.

There's not quite as much to enjoy as the reviews lead you to believe
3/5

As the reviews indicated, the tool I received didn't live up to them. At first, I was able to get a few clean cuts, but I noticed it became increasingly difficult over time. Although I thought it might only be a matter of technique or the product I was cutting, after cutting several brands of cables and housings, fast, slow, etc. , I still got less than satisfactory results.

I am much happier with this newer Park CN than my old one The cutter has four blades
5/5

I want to leave a legacy at CN-Park There were 4 worn, undersized, and outdated cutters Those old cutters can be seen on the far right of the photo. This is my ever present Director of Quality Control, sorry for the cat feet in the photo. There used to be a CN-type system It was OK to cut brake and derailleur cables with the four cutters, but they did damage the cable housings. For cable housing, I've been using my Makita 18V battery grinder with a cutoff wheel, but that was a messy solution and I had to ream every cable housing I cut with both my old CN-600 and my Makita grinder. The Makita saw cut off wheel has 4's on it. In addition, I spent $40 on the Park CN It was well worth the money to purchase ten cutters. New Park cable cutters/crimpers make it easy to cut any cable or housing on a bike. Various cable ends, including cable ends and housing ends, can also be crimped by them. The Swiss Army knife reamer comes in handy sometimes when I have to ream outer cable housings that are lined. Shimano cables are also not always accurate because they sometimes have an inner liner that is difficult to cut cleanly. I used to have a Previously, the 4 was limited in the types of clean cuts they could make and cable housing was not included, so a new investment was made. In the photo you can see the new CN-style bridge A CN-L 10 cut next to a CN-L from the 1980s The cutter has four blades. Because this cutter has not been able to cut lined outer cables consistently without hit/miss, I have given it 5 stars, but is really a 4. Because I have not found a better cutter, the rating will remain 5 stars. This is a 5-star rating. Generally, it was well worth the money, as are most of Park's tools. Thank you for your assistance!.
