I'm guessing he's about 5 or 6 feet tall. It's difficult to say for sure because of where I have it set up, but it's at least 5 feet.
Plastic
I just tried it and measured it; squeezing it as hard as I could, it seemed to max out at 3 1/4". You might be able to get it to work, but if the post is round, as I assume it is, it may be difficult to grip.

We primarily use these to hold grow lamps, so we don't use the reflector to prevent the lamp from overheating. We now have about a dozen and at about 6-cents each, the clamps hold tight and the switch works fine, so buying these is largely a matter of cost. These were well worth the money when they were a buck each, but now that they're almost 13-years-old, they're no longer so. I wouldn't pay more than a buck each, and I'd go back to being cheap and look for a better deal. We use clamp lights because they need to be moved a lot as plants grow and/or are moved, and they can easily be focused to exactly where needed. They do have a plastic standard lamp base so they won't take a lamp that gets really hot, so if that's the desired use I'd recommend a porcelain base, but for our low heat LED lamps they're just fine. We have a number of indoor greenhouses and other seedling areas, but it seems like we always need more.
Nothing special here, just a cheap clamp light. I just wanted to point out that it DOES come with a power cord, despite the fact that it isn't stated explicitly in the description.
I'm sure I'll be able to make it work, but I'm disappointed. The reflector is excellent, and the cord length is adequate, but it will not support the weight of a BR30 grow bulb. When you clamp it to something, the entire reflector folds in on itself, making it impossible to light the plants. To prop up the reflector, you'll need to use an extra wire or a support. It's a good option if you need super-cheap grow lights, but keep in mind that anything larger than a standard incandescent lightbulb will require some rigging.
The two fixtures I purchased have actually exceeded my expectations. They're holding up incredibly heavy LED grow bulbs just fine, and I feel like I got more than I paid for. They do a good job, and the power cords were long enough to reach all of the places they needed to go.
The clamps were removed to allow them to hang a little lower. I purchased some low-watt edison bulbs with a nice amber glow, and they worked perfectly!.
I bought it after seeing several DIY videos for photography and video lighting alternatives, and it works fine, but a pro light vs this DIY setup is not comparable. This item is extremely light, stackable with other similar rings, reflective, and has a strong border. It's not easy to bend, and if you're not careful, it can ding the rest of the body, making it unattractive; the base border between the lightbulb and the clamp is difficult to secure in place. Outside, I used matte black paint to paint my reflectors. They are suitable for use as a home ambient lamp, but not as a photography reflector, in my opinion. It gets the job done, but after using it for that purpose, I'm not sure I'll go back to it.
For use with a photography light box, these clamp lights are excellent. I purchased three and intended to purchase a fourth, but the price has doubled in the last four months for some reason (I purchased it for $7). For $7, it's a good deal, and for double that, it's even better.
Honestly: br>br> They have a flimsy appearance and feel to them. That is meaningless to me. For my seedlings, I currently have two of these set up with grow lights. The fixtures appear to be in good working order. exactly as they are supposed to be. They're simple to understand (how to set them up, where things go, and so on). Although the cord length could be improved, it is not unmanageable. I've included a photo of one such setup. br>br>These are absolutely ideal for what I was looking for. They're sturdy enough, function as intended, and the price can't be beat; I was able to clamp them to a variety of things while experimenting with where they'd fit best. I'm pleased with my purchase, and if I need more E27 bulbs, I'll order more of these fixtures. Buy these instead: br>br> If you're looking for a low-cost light fixture, stay away from these: If you want to work in the field of cosmetics or aesthetics, They aren't attractive, and there isn't anything that can be done about it. br>br>Also, unless you're me, this may come as a no-brainer: The metal dome piece screws into the base where the light is inserted if you purchase these. I was having trouble figuring out how to put it together because there are several different ways to do it.
