It depends on the hole width, but for a 12" wide hole, 40" is not an issue. 48" becomes a bit of a challenge.

The only disadvantage is that my wife now considers digging in the hard desert to be a piece of cake. Every week, she goes out and buys a new plant. I believe my rotator cuff has been shredded. She wants me to dig down 30 inches in this long 3' x 6' area. She claims it's for a hedge, but it appears to fit my body perfectly. You'll know the truth if you come across a novel called Death by Post Hole Digger. Don't make the mistake of purchasing one. It makes digging holes far too simple - even if it's in the middle of the desert.
This item lasted exactly one and a half holes digging in soft dirt; if you need to dig more than one hole or want a tool that will last for years, look elsewhere!.
br>I haven't used this as of this entry. I purchased it because it was made in the United States and because the product description stated that it was 68 degrees. a length of 8 inches, The 58, not so much. Its true size is 5 inches. I'm going to dig four more holes, each 16 inches wide and four feet deep. I'm a 52-year-old woman. I already had 5 in the post hole digger, and I wanted to use something longer after digging two holes. I DO HOPE the negative reviews I've read about my new digger will not manifest with my new digger, as it is only 6 inches longer than what I already have. In about a month or so, I may need to revise this review. Please keep in mind: Ames, adjust the dimensions of your product! br>br>PRODUCT REVIEW UPDATED - After using this post hole digger, I found it to be a very good tool. I dug four 16" holes, each four feet deep, with NO PROBLEMS.
dissatisfying We received this product quickly, and the price was reasonable; I was glad that Amazon delivered it so that I didn't have to cram one into my car. Unfortunately, it isn't very powerful. We broke on the second hole, and we weren't doing anything out of the ordinary - In fairly soft soil, only 24 inch deep holes were dug. I'm disappointed because I had hoped we'd be able to match the product's positive reviews.
Either the design is poor or the construction is of poor quality. Two bolted-together metal parts make up the metal part. During a routing soft ground digging operation, all three bolts snapped.
It's a standard 48" rather than the advertised 68" - The shipping box measures 68" by 68" by 68" by 68" by.
I only needed to dig one (1) hole, but I didn't have any of these. It was the cheapest I could find (along with local hardware and big-box stores). It worked (at least in big-box stores). br>br>I wouldn't consider this a daily driver tool, but it's priced near the "disposable tool" level, and it's unquestionably a five-star item at that price point. br>br>In the long run, I'd choose heavy-duty equipment. However, the handles are made of heavy-duty fiberglass.
You get what you pay for, very sturdy piece of equipment, I needed to plant some trees in my yard, (very rocky soil), so I purchased this, " Post Hole " digger to dig said holes, to plant said trees, and it worked, the depth measurement printed on the side of one of the handles, is very handy especially since I needed to plant the trees at a depth of 2 feet, per the planting instructions that came with these trees, Thank You Very Much, I am.
