Questions & Answers

My purpose is to find a meter I can use on a boat at a reasonable price. What is the ability of this moisture meter to read through laminates to find the core's wetness level?

I agree! By far, it is the best product on the market it is accurate! It is the very one I own, as I am a fiberglass and gelcoat repair expert. However, the probe goes four inches deep! The back flat part reads 3/4 inches deep, but the probe goes into four inches! I have been in the business of gelcoat color matching and glass work since I was 18 years old, and technology has changed a lot in thirty years. Guess There are even needle probes built in to track down leaks in the I consider this to be the best of them all. I'd rather have that than the one that cost over a thousand dollars! The best unit the money can buy is here. Get it you will love this thing! The locals often refer to me as "Dr. Gelcoat" in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

In my basement, there recently was water on the floor on one end. Is it possible to use this to determine if there is also moisture inside the wall, behind the drywall? appears to be backed with you very much! ?

So that's it! The calibration issues I encountered with my MMD950 made me keep it. A successful calibration is when the error wanders for a few minutes until it ends up stable at 0 to 2%. A comparison mode is a reliable method for utilizing the instrument. It's likely that if no water is present during the test, the REL mode will display 7 to 9. A body of water is likely to increase the percentage to at least 17 and possibly If there are roof leaks, I expect it to pick up on those, showing a low reading on dry days and a high reading on rainy days. It might be worthwhile for you to take REL readings at various points along the basement wall to see if they indicate dryness in certain areas. Over top of the pool, check your readings and see if they are higher. There are four inches of water in the meter, according to the book. The experience I have in that area is insufficient to confirm it. Opening the sheetrock to see behind it is not a big deal. To be able to understand what's happening, you've got to know where you stand.

The product is supposed to work with bamboo floors and concrete sub floors, right?

The bamboo flooring may do well with this, however the concrete may not. Moisture will always be retained by concrete, so it will result in a moisture reading regardless

If the unit reads 0, does it mean it is inoperative Are you able to handle 1% moisture to 10% moisture or more? Are you developing a food product that you would like to use it on?

When you use the number 0, you are representing the 0th decimal place. If you're looking for high accuracy, 1% would be the best choice. Based on my calculations, I figure that the meter is accurate to plus or minus two or three percent. A roof leak detector is something I use to detect There is no leak between six and ten. A leak from 18 onwards is considered to be Since it is stated in the meter description, it will measure 0% to 99.999%. It's possible I don't understand what you are asking!

This handy tool can be used to check for leaks and damage in the home
5/5

In a nutshell A small area of water damage appeared on the side of a kitchen cabinet one afternoon. In order to find the exact source of the leak, I called the contractor (it was a new house), and while I was leaving a message I ordered the moisture meter as well. It was long before the contractor called me back that the meter arrived, and when I received it in hand I began I was frightened, I was really, really frightened. In parts of the cabinets, the moisture meter indicated a level of 50+% and on the wood floor near the kitchen a level of 30%. In addition to the warping floor and peeling cabinet veneer, the living room floor was warped when the contractor finally came. As soon as he saw the damage, the contractor turned white. Then he began cutting sections of drywall from sections of drywall cut out of the sink and dishwasher (not the problem BTW). It turned out that the wet stack was leaking. I never expected such a mess to occur. It was horrendous and expensive. I had to wait nearly a month for everything to be In fact, I consider this moisture meter as my best friend now. During periodic inspections of my kitchen and bathroom cabinets as well as the walls and flooring, I check As far as determining moisture problems, I probably won't be able to gauge the accuracy of the readings, but I am looking for variations from one place to another that indicate that moisture is present. So this is a tool that each home owner should have. It will tell you when there is a leak in the wall or under the cabinet long before the tiny leak has a chance to become a major problem. Announcing an update As far as models go, the model I'm using is described as a deep sensing moisture meter that uses a pin type or pinless sensor and a remote probe.

I bought this to check for leaks and water damage around the mast and chain plates on my fiberglass boat
5/5

It does its job well and is at a great price. However, right now our boat is covered by 12 inches of snow. My bathroom where I have a known water issue was the first place I tried it. The ball enabled me to map the extent of a place where occasional leaks are caused by ice dams. there is still water damage, no surprise. In addition, I was able to detect twice as much moisture under the floor tiles directly in front of the shower as I was on the other side of It has been a few days since I used the pins. The pins will allow you to determine the proportion of water in an absolute sense. A ball can only be used as a comparison tool between two areas. Despite its low price, it seems like an excellent tool. It comes in a nice case, and comes with a 9-volt battery pre-installed. Extra sets of pins are included, each with a slightly different shape. In order to prevent pins from being damaged or lost, they have a protective cover. I checked the boat as soon as the snow melted since I originally posted it. There seems to be no problem with the meter. I found the core to be wet and that its deterioration correlated with the wetness the meter indicated it would be when I drilled out the holes for the genoa track bolts. I found that the meter seems to be very reliable at least when used in the relative wetness mode.

Despite the fact that all things are relative, I do not have a good way to verify the accuracy of the readings from this tool
5/5

In spite of this, I have been working wood long enough to be able to perform a "reality check. ". I was able to get useful ranges of what I was looking for in moisture content by comparing readings made from different types of wood under different conditions (stored indoors, in a shed, outdoors, under cover, etc. ). It turned out I used BOTH measuring systems a lot. I found the prongs to be helpful in letting me know when the surface was dry enough to apply I used the ball to check if the interior of the ball had absorbed a lot of water, which would cause the surface readings to become distorted. In this instance, I was able to predict whether the inside of a problematic beam was hopelessly wet, which was a big payoff for me. A "Deep Sensing" combined with some common sense led us to conclude that one half of the beam was fine, but that the other one The likelihood of these sections being bad was confirmed when I had everything jacked up and cut out the bad parts. Although one of the sections was acceptable, the other section didn't stand up to scrutiny. Based on my meter readings, I had everything ready to replace that one chunk (would've been in trouble if my interpretation of the meter had been incorrect! I was pleased that the job went smoothly (how often does that happen!). *)For your info To assess the depth of a problem, use wood that has known dimensions and use that to figure out how deep it will Measuring a 2x square that reaches beyond the range of the meter head is a good example. Using both sides of your target 4" thick beam, measure it. You will need to measure the thick beam with the 2x square over it from both sides of the thick It seems that moisture inside the beam is pretty evenly distributed, based on the measurements taken from both sides. It is possible for one side of the beam to have more moisture than the other, if they are not exactly the same. Can you please let me know if this meter is accurate? Despite my efforts, I am unable to verify this. It should pay off to use this tool intelligently, though, as relative values can be used in various ways. One project saved me the cost of the tool. I would recommend this method to others.

This is likely to work for someone who knows what they're doing however, I don't know what it is
3/5

Since I don't know what I was doing, I ended up returning this because I didn't know what I was doing. Obviously I purchased it to check for moisture in the walls but I'm not a professional. I wanted to make sure my house didn't collapse. After trying out thermal cameras to see moisture and other problems, I decided to get a general camera. However, I did not like using this and I am not smart enough to always use a general camera.
