My impression when I ordered this caliper was that I was ordering a new item made by a company that took pride in its work at least a little. Instead, I received a corroded, scratched up, filthy piece of metal in the shape of a vernier caliper, which looks for all the world like it has been sitting in a shade tree mechanics junk box for the past few Each jaw of the caliper is rough and unfinished, and every edge is burred with razor-sharp burrs. There were a number of places where the chrome was worn away. The sad little tool has a lot of finger prints on it. Throughout the width of the scale there is an evident dirt track. A Mitutoyo Vernier Caliper of this caliber was not what I expected. No, I didn't expect to buy a second-hand trade in with grubby finger prints, battered and rusted.

As a bike nerd and someone who frequently works on their bikes, I wanted a better measuring tool for dropout spacings, etc. I have a background in chemistry, so calipers are not a foreign concept to me. They are indeed stainless steel and I am also assured that as long as I do not abuse them, they will last me for a very long time. I have seen very expensive calipers. They look a teensy bit cheap, and I feel a teensy bit cheap, but that's only because I have seen so many cheap The measurements are good, and I could tell from what I saw that they are accurate at least to the nearest millimeter (I'd definitely hope so). My measurements of things I've measured with other calipers are what I used to calculate. With their help, I could easily measure my 125mm dropouts, and I was able to decide how to rebuild the drivetrain on my fixed gear bike. Their perfectly adequate functionality, inexpensive price, and sturdy construction make them a good buy in my book The construction is very nice. There are a number of points I agree with many of the other reviewers There are two problems with the components (1) dimensional accuracy is low The answer was zero in one instance. This is off by . 021. Furthermore, there are problems with assembly quality A screw almost fell out and two other screws almost fell out as well. A rough surface finish is considered to be a third problem. (2) At zero, the metric accuracy of the axis was reasonably good, but that of the inch axis was close to zero. Using the Mitutoyo Digimatic, I took the 18th digit off. The edges on my sample didn't appear to be sharp, as others have mentioned. If you knew how to read the scale, the numbers were easy to read. In the field, I bought this to do rough hardware dimensioning. It's barely adequate for what I wanted - a cheap metal caliper, which I could throw into the arm rest of my truck and not worry about it getting lost. Given the accuracy issues, I won't be using it. Consider investing in a dial caliper for $40 if you want even more accuracy.

It is difficult to read the measurements because of the bad markings They have an indication for 1/16 inch (shorter) and 1/8 inch (longer) but if that is it, you will be hard pressed to read any measurements at a glance without counting marks or reaching for a pencil and marking scales
- 1/64 in+ precision measurements will be off by a good bit because there is a little movement in the moving part. Worse of all is that the measurements are inaccurate tried a caliper directly against another I trust that I have and I got strange readings. After using these two calipers without any delay for a while, I found out a man with two watches can't tell time. With a subscript I'm not sure what the other one has to say.

Though I agree that a digital readout is simpler, I really do not like the idea of a dead battery, especially since this is not something I will use every day (and so I keep spare batteries on hand). While a dial caliper is simpler and less expensive, I preferred a digital one. A tutorial video on YouTube is sure to be available for those who have never used a vernier caliper. There was an oil stain on the corner of the box when it arrived This is not a serious issue. The calipers did have to be wiped clean after opening the box due to oil. I just use them for general measuring and woodshop work. They do not have the smoothest sliding action, but they are perfectly acceptable for my needs. I think you'll find these a bit cheaper than NIST precision except if you are looking for extreme precision.
