In essence, this is a vernier caliper, just not one that is high-precision. it is typical for a "real" (metal, expensive) tool to have an adjustment knob, this one has a plastic one. A casual caliper like this is perfect for everyday course, it is not a precision caliper for measurements to a thousandth of an inch. Although 001 may not be correct for everything, a lot of things can be done with a 001. My garage, shed, and car are stocked with plastic calipers that I use in the garage, on trips to Home Depot, and for those jobs around the house. I find these to be very useful, and the price is very reasonable. Don't fall for the cheaper models made in China that sell for five dollars each. Junk like that is not good.
