For a whole-house retrofit, I ordered 24 of these units. They arrived safely packaged and in good condition. The housing is glossy white, and the electrical box has standard wiring (for LED pins). They are not as heavy as Halo fixtures, but they are IC rated and airtight for a much lower price, and the electrician installed them with a standard round saw attachment on his drill, and they went in easily and snugly to the ceiling. Installed housing with and without trim, as well as trim on a plaster ceiling, are shown in the photos. Most importantly, they're compatible with Costco's FEIT 4" retrofit LED trims. There were no problems with connections because the pins fit together perfectly. The trims are very tightly fitted to the housings, resulting in a modern and fantastic look. It's impossible to make a mistake with this.
This was not a pleasant experience for me. There were some good design elements, but they could be better. br>The instructions say to cut a 412" hole in the ceiling for a 4" housing, but the handy stick-in-the-ceiling feature comes in handy. The diameter of the template provided is 414 inches. In a spare piece of ceiling board, I tried making test holes of both sizes and discovered that 412" is too large, which I am glad I discovered before it was too late. If you're installing a 4" lamp and housing, you won't be replacing a 6" recessed lamp, and it's likely that, like me, you're replacing an old lighting fixture that's wired into a 312" metal box that's attached to a ceiling joist. Removing that box and making that hole 414" diameter will put you right up against the joist, which isn't ideal for the Sunco Remodel can. It has four tines that hold it in place in the ceiling, and while they're not exactly square, they're more of a rectangular shape, the tines don't seat because they're too wide and outboard of the can to hit the joist. br>br>The tines have some rubber adhesive tape on their inside surface with the can, but its purpose, as well as whether the release tape needs to be removed, is not explained in the instructions. I'm guessing it has something to do with the product's "Air Tight" claim, but without the rubber tape, the retention tines sat much better. I'm not sure if removing it broke any electrical codes, but it was already falling apart after my struggles to get the tines to seat close to the joist. According to the Amazon description, it's "the safest LED housing for your home and family" and "AIR TIGHT. " IC RATED: Overheating and fires caused by hot light fixtures can be prevented. " So, on the one hand, it's made for cool LED fixtures, and on the other, it's made for hot fixtures, like halogen, I suppose. " br>br>The four tines are incompatible with lamps with three tines, such as the Hyperikon 4" LED Downlight I purchased. One set of tines seems to get in the way of the others at all times. br>Electrical connections are made in an electrical box that is mounted on an arm outboard of the can. That arm, in my opinion, is a little too long. You can't assume that existing wiring will reach all the way to and into the distant can when designing a product for remodels. br>br>I liked the quick connection blocks that connect to the house wiring and the lamp connector that easily mates with it.
These are well-crafted from thick-gauge steel. there's plenty of metal, the junction box has plenty of room, and the push-button The use of in connectors makes wiring a breeze. There are, however, drawbacks. The clips are the worst I've ever seen on a housing brand. They were difficult to install in the 1 inch thick plaster ceilings we have; probably easier in 1/2 inch drywall. Their legs splay out further than most, meaning you should not place your fixture closer than about 2 inches from a joist. The template's hole is too small for the clip tabs to fit through, so you'll have to make four little notches to accommodate them. However, don't make the hole too big because the can's lip has a small tolerance. The wire exits the housing through an unsealed hole; That was done with rope caulk. Because of the low price, I'll probably buy more of these, but they're not the most user-friendly.
For the 4" can, they recommend doing a 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 a hole of 1/2" I'd give it a 4 out of 5 stars. 3/8" or even 4" is a good size. It would have been a better fit if the hole had been 1/4" smaller. My trims are only just covering the hole. They also include a template and instructions that show how to use a keyhole saw. br>br> If you're not a surgeon with a jab saw, don't try it. Only cut holes with a hole saw. br>br>Overall, a fantastic value for money can.
I bought this to replace a 48-inch wide cabinet in my kitchen. with recess cans in a flush mount ceiling light fixture I hired an electrician to complete the wiring, and he hooked up these cans to a new Kasa smart dimmer. I have a four-piece retrofit kit that I use. I'm not worried about getting the trim for the cans because I'm using in lights instead of BR20 bulbs. br>br>The cans are fine; I'm glad I didn't go for something more expensive in the hopes of getting better results. There are no issues with these cans that I can think of.
These housings are impressive and of the same high quality as those found in a major hardware retailer. In fact, I found them to be a little more compact and easier to place in between the joists, and the feet that hold them in place are sturdy and easy to maneuver. Quick connects are already installed on each wire in the housing when the connection wires are delivered. It's literally a plug-and-play device. I intend to purchase more for my current and future home renovation projects. I would strongly suggest it. You get a lot of bang for your buck.
Everything went smoothly. Retrofit cans for big box hardware stores are more than half the price of these. Plus, Amazon delivered "Same Day" to the job site for a lower price, and it was simple to install into sheetrock ceilings. Use a 4 1/4 or 4 1/2 inch hole saw to speed up the installation process. Connecting the cans was a breeze once the holes were cut and the electrical lines were run. One of the leads already has a quick connector attached to it. Simply strip and join your wires. Simply place the can in the hole and spread the four mounting clips open to complete the installation. At a fantastic price, this is an excellent product.
