As far as I am concerned, the black filter is the most important one, and the white ones deal with fluoride. I usually replace both, but the black ones should be the first to be replaced.
There is now no way for me to tell what the product is and that is 100% Berkey's fault. Berkey has way too many authorized distributors and does not clamp down on offenders or counterfeiters. So, when I need filters in the future, I will go straight to purusa and order I would rather have them since they are cheaper and fit my Berkey. They have a 5-year life expectancy according to the OEM. These fluoride filters did not last very long, so I replaced them. My guess is that they work, but you have to hang them in the bottom container with the filtered water The Fluoride filters will sit in your drinking water for a full day if you fill the top container with the fluoride filters. This was an afterthought in the design, and it puts a lot of weight on the threads of the black filters when you turn the top over to clean. There is no need to replace black filters every 5 years as they should last for that long. About two years ago, the threads on one of the filters stripped (you can't see the damage, but when you tighten the nut you can clearly see it). According to one article, you can put Teflon tape on the threads to hold the nut in place. Over the course of the last year, I followed that method.
