We've been fans of bidet toilet seats since our first trip to Japan nearly two decades ago. In our house, we've always had Toto products. We didn't have a bidet when we built our house in Hawaii, and we've missed the comfort and cleanliness it provides. br>br>We had never heard of Brondell or the "Toto clone" bidets until we saw them on Amazon. We decided to go with the SE400 because it seemed to have a good mix of features at a "value" price. br>br>Overall, it's a good value for the money. br>br>Shipping was quick, packaging was excellent, and setup was simple. Because the mounting plate design is fairly standard on most bidets, it took less than 15 minutes from the time the box was opened to complete the installation. The installation instructions are straightforward and easy to follow. Water hookup is a breeze with the included nylon "T" adapter. For safety, the 3 1/2-foot power cord must be plugged into a GFCI outlet or GFCI extension cord. (This is an important precaution that you should not overlook. ) ) In fact, installing a convenient electrical outlet and wiring it into the bathroom's GFCI circuit was the most difficult part of the job for me. (To replace the magazine rack in the modern bath, I chose an outlet with built-in USB charging ports. ) )br>br>The "fit and finish" of the unit is excellent. Even at first glance, the controls are well-designed and relatively simple to understand. The unit's operation and control have some subtleties that make reading the manual worthwhile. br>br>The factory settings for temperature, position, and other variables are in the middle of the range and adjustable. Even if the unit is unplugged, the user settings are remembered. br>br>The control arm is mounted on the side and is easily accessible. The arm mounting's low profile makes it simple to install in a confined area. (Take a look at the illustration. ) ) Some people, on the other hand, may prefer a separate remote control, so keep that in mind when comparing features. br>br>Being a "value" model, the operating features are basic for a bidet seat, but they do the job well. br>br>There are two basic modes on the single water jet: Both the rear and front of the car need to be washed. The front/back positioning of each mode can be adjusted. The water pressure of the jet can be adjusted over a small range, which is less than that of the Totos I've used previously but still adequate. An adjustment for jet spray width isn't included in this model. It's a small concession, but you might find yourself "wiggling for position" now and then. There is a "Move" function in the wash modes that oscillates the jet. In a value model, this is a useful feature. When manually activated, the wash cycle lasts two minutes before shutting down. By pressing the wash button again, the cycle can be restarted immediately. By pressing the Stop button, you can turn off the wash (and possibly the dry) function at any time. br>br>The wash system stores water in a small reservoir tank and heats it to your desired temperature with a small electric element. We've always used tankless units with "On-Demand" service. The reservoir system pales in comparison to "on-demand" heating, and it's a bit of a letdown. The main flaw is the temperature inconsistency of the delivered water. The water cools as the washing goes on, and the heating element struggles to keep up. As one might expect, the problem is most noticeable at the highest temperature and pressure settings, but it can be found at any setting. When the reservoir is refilled, the water reheats quickly (although our standing water temperature is probably around 70 degrees). Of course, it will take longer with colder water. )br>br>Heated air is circulated by a fan. The fan is relatively quiet, and the air temperature can be adjusted. This was more effective than the same drying function on my Toto units, which I was pleasantly surprised by. br>br>Unlike other models, this one does not come with a carbon deodorizer filter. br>br>However, a heated seat is a "luxury" feature that did make it onto this model. For those cold bathroom trips, this is ideal! There is no such thing as a time-of-day or a time-of-year When the day control is turned on, the seat is heated continuously. br>br>A switchable LED "night light" is included in this model. In a dark bathroom, this is a useful feature for finding the toilet. It's probably because I grew up watching too many horror movies, but the blue glow reminds me of those scenes where we'd scream, "Don't go in there!" "br>br>There are three "specialty" buttons to choose from: Auto, Eco, and Massage are three words that come to mind when thinking about these three words br>br>Auto starts a one-minute rear wash/dry cycle with middle-of-the-range temperature and pressure settings. br>br>Eco maintains an ambient temperature of 85 degrees Fahrenheit in the pool and on the seats. br>br>Massage is a feature that allows you to adjust the wash jet pressure. However, I didn't notice much of a difference in this mode. Our home is 100% solar powered, so energy use is a consideration

When the water heater is turned on, it consumes about 600 watts. The temperature setting, feed water, and room air temperature all influence how long and how often the water heater is turned on. The seat heater consumes between 20 and 30 watts of electricity. 60 watts, depending on the temperature setting and whether or not you use the Eco mode. When not heating water, the wash function uses about 5 1/2 watts, and when the Move function is used, it uses about 10 watts. On a medium temperature setting, the Dry mode consumes approximately 120 watts. With an unheated seat, a 2-minute wash followed by a 2-minute dry cycle at medium temperature and pressure uses less than 0. kwh (kilowatt hours) is a unit of energy. The seat heater, in my opinion, consumes the most energy. Of course, it can be turned off, but having a timer would be much more convenient. To help save energy, set the timer for the day. While heating the seat, the Eco mode consumes only 20 watts. br>br>Because this is a new model that we've only had for a week, I can't comment on its durability or longevity. It is covered by a one-year warranty. Advantages: br>br> • A clean, simple design with a respectable appearance. • Well-considered br> • Simple installation. br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>br>b • Ergonomics that are comfortable. br>• A seat lid that can be used as a seat. br>br>Contrary to popular belief, there are a number of disadvantages to using this product. br>• The reservoir system has a hard time keeping the water at a consistent temperature. • There is no way to adjust the width of the wash jet. br>br>Overall, we're relieved to have a bidet seat in our lives again. The SE400 is a good value due to its combination of quality, features, and price.

I spent a lot of time researching brands, prices, features, ease of installation, and just about every other detail I could think of, and this model came out as the best value for the money and the one with all the features you'd want without having to pay top dollar for another model from the same manufacturer. br>br>I debated whether or not having a remote would be beneficial, but now that I've had this one for a while, I'm actually glad I didn't get one with one because they have a habit of never being where they're supposed to be; or at least that's how you'd expect them to be. I have a hard enough time keeping track of the TV remote, so I figured it wouldn't be the best time to discover it wasn't where it should be under these circumstances. Never mind that it adds to the cost of the bidet while providing no comparable added value. We're not dealing with a television here, once again. br>br>When it comes to the unit itself, prepare to feel as if you've died and gone to Heaven. Installing it and learning how to use it was a breeze. If you have grandchildren, they prefer to sit on the toilet rather than play video games, at least so far. They'd also be a good reason to avoid using a remote. I'm not sure it'll last as long as a Nintendo, but it's clearly a hit with the kids. br>br>At least, that's how it's been for my wife and me. The only thing I recommend is that you have a GFI-protected power outlet nearby. I know people who have 10 foot extension cords dragging across their bathrooms because, in most cases, there are no outlets installed anywhere near a toilet, especially if the toilet is in a self-contained area of a master bathroom like ours. br>br>I spent less than $100 on an electrician to install a GFI protected outlet. To have it done, you'll need to pay 00. It was a simple installation because our bathroom uses GFI breakers in the main breaker box; the most difficult part was cutting the hole in the tile wall where the outlet was installed. Nonetheless, it was a cost-effective option that allowed for a clean installation. I liked this bidet seat at first, but I've run into a couple of issues that have caused me to reconsider: 1. br>br> The blow dryer is inconsistent in its performance. The fan output is covered by a small plastic flap that is supposed to be pushed up when the fan is turned on. It usually sticks in practice, so the only way to make it work is to reach down and flip it up while seated on the toilet. I haven't used the dryer in a long time. 2. br>br>1. br>br>br>br>br>br I noticed the reservoir was slowly leaking (a drip from the nozzle and chassis when not in use) a few days ago. I removed the seat and replaced it, which stopped the leak, but the slow drip leads me to believe there is a hairline crack somewhere that will cause problems in the future. br>br>It's great when it works, but the dryer isn't working and there's a leak — I've only had it for about three months.
