I'm not certain. Ours was stained to match the red oak banisters that we already had.
I'm not sure, but the taper is clearly visible; however, the taper isn't very strong; I'd estimate 1/32nd taper. You'll be fine if you use a 5/8 bit; all it takes is a quick tap with a hammer to make it flush. br>These are decent plugs; they're not something you'd want to use on anything fancy, but they fit well and look good.
I'm not sure how thick these are out of the package, but since they're wood, you should be able to cut them down to 1/8 inch with the right vise and fine bladed saw if they're over 1/8 inch thick. Alternatively, you could sand them.

Excellent plugs with a useful taper; however, they will need to be sawn flush with the work with a good trimming tool.
