Rock climbing is something I know little about, but I sure as hell would not attempt it. It is designed to be embedded in wood after a hole is drilled with the appropriate diameter of hold. Our shelves didn't stay in place even with a threaded pole, so we tried using these as part of an extension pole. It sounded like that we'd be able to hammer them into place and thread the pole through them, but that doesn't work. If you put a bolt through from the other side and pulled it tight, I'm sure they would be okay.
There is no way to hold the nut in place with 5/16-long prongs over time. If those nuts are to be used one time (and even if 10% of them "flatten" instantly), then they might be okay for a climbing wall, but not for a climbing wall of any kind.
