There is exactly one inch between the metal legs on each side. In the beginning, I purchased the one inch covers, thinking that was the size of the legs they were intended I don't agree! If you want the one, you need a little extra wiggle room and a larger size I was able to fit them with a very firm fit after 1/8 inch of adjustment.
I replaced the old set on my fold out step ladder with these nice replacements. This is a great product. It fits well, is of high quality. I (Please note that my step ladder front legs were different sizes from the rear legs as a result, I ordered a second order 1/8inch larger. You may not find this to be the case with your step ladder, but thought you might want to check this out before placing your order).

It works well for what I was looking for. A frame for my dog's bed/cot was made out of 1/2" Schedule 40 gas pipe, and they fit well over the caps. As a result, the dog bed doesn't slip when the dog is on it, and I no longer have to worry about it damaging I like it!.
