Questions & Answers

I'd like to use this to fill a gap left by a loose screw. Will I be able to replace the screw in the filled hole after it has dried?

When wood filler is drilled, it will crack and disintegrate. As a cabinetmaker, I can offer a simple and long-lasting solution to your enlarged screw hole issue. 3 times the size of the damaged hole, cut a small piece of wooden dowel. Most screws work best in the 3/8 to 1/2 inch range. Drill a hole the same size as the dowel with a bit that is the same size. Using coarse sandpaper, slightly taper one of the dowel's edges. Insert the dowel piece after covering the hole with wood glue. It's possible you'll need to use a hammer to gently tap it in. Leave about an eighth of an inch of the dowel exposed and wipe away any excess glue with a damp rag. Allow plenty of time for the glue to cure. Trim the dowel with a sharp knife or a small flat saw once it is completely dry. Re-finish the dowel by sanding it flush with the surface. Make a hole for your screw. If desired, apply a stain or finish. This technique can be used on any wood surface, including MDF and particle board.

Is it appropriate to wear this outside?

Yes, it is suitable for outdoor use; however, it is recommended that an oil-based primer be applied first, followed by the application of paint.

Is it possible to use this to fill cracks in a wooden deck?

It could. In an ideal world, you'd sand the area(s) down to expose the wood, fill the area, let it dry, sand, and then seal the filler and surrounding area. Outside, I've used it and it's still going strong.

Is it necessary to combine the contents of the entire container at once?

Work in small groups. To avoid drying out, use only a small amount as needed and close the container each time. To extend work time, make a slurry or paste with a small amount in a plastic mixing tray and a few drops of water (a 4 inch poly paint roller tray works well). When the putty in the tray has dried, throw it away because it will not rehydrate. soften. Simply throw out the old batch and start over for the next session. Tip: To extend the shelf life of the cover, place a sheet of plastic wrap between it and the container. I do this with all of my finishing products (except lacquers) and all bottled glues, and as a 40-year cabinetmaker, I can attest to the fact that the storage method works. It also prevents the product from becoming skinned over.

Baltic Birch stain test
4/5

After reading online reviews about this filler's inability to take stain, I decided to put it to the test. br>On a piece of Baltic Birch plywood, I applied a thin coat. Baltic Birch was chosen because it is a light wood that stains evenly. In contrast to Maple, which is also very light but takes stain unevenly for no apparent reason. br>The cured filler matched the bare wood quite well; Though "close," the color is a little yellower. It looked even better after a light sanding. br>When applying the stain (Minwax Dark Walnut 2716), I started with bare wood, sanded filler, and an unfinished surface. Filler that has been sanded. br>I let the stain sit for four hours before removing it. 5 minutes later, I wiped it down with a cotton cloth and snapped a photo (attached). br>When compared to the un-sanded filler, the sanded filler took the stain better. sanded. br>On the sanded filler and bare wood, the stain color appears to be similar. br>The un-br>The un-br>The un-br>The Compared to bare wood, sanded filler is lighter. br>So the answer is YES, this filler will stain. Is it going to match your wood's staining characteristics? br>Perhaps. Although this material WILL take stain, it will most likely not match exactly. Unlike some other fillers I've tried, this one doesn't resist staining.

This item fulfills its purpose
5/5

I live in a rural area where mice (and other critters) are common, and one of them ate through the wood panel siding on my house last year. I couldn't fix it because it was too cold outside, so I had to wait until the weather improved. I tried not to look at it every time I passed by. When the weather improved, there was a large area to clear. replace. br>br>Now, keep in mind that I had no idea what I was doing at the time. In the interim, I'm going to submit my order. I was so worried when I got it that I couldn't sleep. I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who was (temporarily) thankful for the slow shipping because it gave me an excuse not to start. My procrastination appears to be getting worse as I get older. br>br>When the product finally arrived, I wasn't sure if it would work. The clerk at my local hardware store suggested that I treat the wood with wood hardener first, which I did. br>br>I decided that doing it in layers would be a good idea. Because the wood rotted when exposed to water, ice, and snow, there was a larger area to repair than just a mouse hole. As a result of being exposed to the elements, there is a certain amount of crud. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh In the meantime, at least one mouse gave birth to a slew of offspring. meeces. (Thank you for not congratulating me. ) )br>br>Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised by how simple it is to use. It's easy to clean with soap. I couldn't use my putty knives because it was too wet, so I shaped it with my hands. The filler is slightly softer than putty, with a consistency similar to spreadable cheese. br>br>I'm almost finished with three layers (plus an initial layer of epoxy for hardcore rodent destruction). Sure, it appears that someone did it and fled, but who cares? It will be covered with a large wood patch, which will then be painted over.

NOT SUITABLE FOR STAINING
3/5

This was a huge thrill for me to discover. It is now merely attempting to rectify the situation. When you remove the putty, it is flaky and dry. It took a long time for me to get it to stick to the wood, but I did it. I sanded the wood and filled the holes (after sanding with an orbitalsander, the filler remained crusty). After that, I applied the stain. The stain was repelled as a result of this. Our bar top is now in such a bad state. I need to figure out how to fix it. I'm so glad I didn't buy it.

NOT PERMANENT! Check out the images
3/5

It is not stainable and clumps when applied, making it nearly impossible to keep it on the scraper paddle/putty knife for placement. It dries yellow and doesn't sand down smooth unless part of the filler is removed. and has now completely ruined the upcycle/refurbish projects that I worked so hard to repair!.

In my opinion, you are number one
5/5

First and foremost, I am extremely pleased with the outcome of this product and will continue to be so if it remains in place. I'm writing a review for Minwax 42853000 Stainable Wood Filler, 16-Ounce. Ounce. br>br>I've seen a lot of reviews that say it won't take the stain. It's important to remember that this isn't wood; it will take stain but won't be perfect. I sanded it down to 60 grit to help absorb the stain, and with two or three layers of urethane, you won't notice the difference. You might get a completely different result if you use a different finishing product. I also didn't use Minwax for the stain, instead opting for a different brand from a competitor that Amazon doesn't sell. I let the filler dry for 24 hours. not just a few, and then the stain was applied. I've included two sets of before and after photos, one of which shows the after pictures with no urethane applied yet. Everything will be fine as long as Amazon does not alter the images. br>br>I can't say for sure, but the match with this filler and staining could be quite different with various types of wood, particularly hardwoods. Take it to a professional who can get the job done by repairing or replacing the damaged piece if you want and expect absolute perfection. If it's an heirloom, go for the best. br>br>There are a lot of different versions of this product being reviewed and lumped together on this one page, which isn't good for any of these products' sales. Especially for those who rely on what they read about them and don't realize the review is for a different Minwax product than the one you're considering purchasing. As a result, those who read reviews should exercise extreme caution in attempting to obtain accurate information on the product they want to try. Some of the items may not be appropriate for the task at hand. Some of the complaints could be due to inexperience or a failure to follow instructions. When several different products are grouped together in this way, there are a lot of variables to consider. br>br>I understand that none of this is particularly helpful, but it is what we have to deal with for the time being. I've noticed that this is becoming more common in all reviews of a variety of products, some of which are a completely different brand of the same thing. There are a few reviews thrown in here and there that have nothing to do with the product you're interested in. Be cautious, and best of luck. I wish you luck with your project!.
