Questions & Answers

Is this suitable for deck joists, or would a more specialized deck flashing, such as Grace Vycor Deck Protector, be preferable?

This would be an excellent idea to apply on top of deck joists as a way to further protect the wood, because it is a self-healing product. This is the type of tape that terminates. It will never peel away if applied carefully. It's probably a better choice for joist protection than the so-called "deck joist protector." Grace vycor deck protector is referred to as a purpose-specific vycor product, but I'm not sure if it's self-adhesive. terminating, but it appears to be normal membrane window flashing (such membranes products require termination to avoid long-term peeling, and this 3M tape is effective for both of these applications). The only warning I have is that because of its extremely aggressive grip, using this product takes some practice. However, I adore it and have used all of the product's various widths for a variety of purposes.

What is the best way to adhere this to 30 sheets of felt paper?

The flashing tape was extremely sticky, as I discovered. It should stick to 30 felt paper well, in my opinion.

Is this a good alternative to metal for butt joints behind hardie plank siding?

I'm not a construction expert, but I do know that this stuff sticks to everything. It's very sticky, but it's not stiff. It stretches a lot, so I'm guessing my answer is no for that reason.

It appeals to me
5/5

Amazing weatherproof tapell for the outdoors! Have I told you how much I enjoy it? IMPORTANT UPDATES TO REVIEW FOR THE MONTHS OF OCTOBER 8, 2020, AND JULY 7, 2021: br>br>OCTOBER 8, 2020 UPDATEbr>While my enthusiasm for this product remains unwavering, there is a major issue with certain rolls and even entire batches of this tape, in my experience, in both width sizes that I use, namely 2" and 4". The issue is a Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QC) issue, or rather a lack thereof, as well as an underlying factory production issue. br>br>The issue is that some rolls of tape are missing the slit in the tan paper backing (also known as liner) when the plastic wrapping is removed from the roll and the roll is opened. In most cases, if the slit is missing in the first few feet of the roll, the slit is missing throughout the rest of the roll. In other cases, the slit appears to be present for the first 5 or 10 feet of tape on the roll, but as you progress further down the roll, you discover that the slit is either completely absent or not deep enough. br>br>Of course, the lack of a slit makes it NEAR-impossible to make it NEAR-impossible to make it NEAR-impossible to make it NEAR It is IMPOSSIBLE to use the tape in the real world because removing the paper backing/liner from the tape becomes extremely difficult. br>br>I first noticed this issue on some 4" wide rolls of this tape a little more than two years ago, but those rolls had been ordered from Amazon over a year before, so they were well past the product return period. When Amazon delivered four rolls of 2" wide tape to me today, I chose to exercise extreme due diligence by removing the plastic and paper wrapping from each roll to ensure that the slit in the backing/liner was indeed present, as I always do with this product nowadays. Even though the packaging bore the correct 3M part number, namely 8067, ALL FOUR rolls in this recent order that arrived here today were completely missing the slit. br>br>For me, the most aggravating aspect of this problem is that I have called several 800 toll-free numbers. 3M's free customer service numbers have been called at least twice in the last two years to report this issue as a serious manufacturing defect and an ongoing QA/QC failure, and their response has been one of complete refusal to accept responsibility for the problem, as well as a complete refusal to try to prevent future occurrences of the problem by revising their QA/QC methods or modifying/upgrading their manufacturing methods. br>br>In each case, a clearly bored, apathetic, and completely powerless low-level employee was involved. "Well, what do you expect? The stuff is made in overseas factories, usually in Asia, and our warehouses have to accept the boxes of rolls shipped to them from the factory on an "as-is" basis," a level Customer Service staffer essentially said to me. is" as a foundation You can't expect our warehouses to inspect each roll individually to ensure that it was correctly manufactured! That'd be far too relaxed! "br>br>They refused to pass my call on to supervisors or the Engineering department in each case. br>br>UPDATE: 7 JULY 2021 br>I'm still having issues with rolls of 2" wide tape from Amazon not having the backing slit cut out. I ordered 5 rolls of 8067 tape from Amazon a week ago (Amazon was both the seller and the shipper), and when they arrived, none of them had the backing slit. Amazon sent me 5 new rolls as a replacement shipment for the first shipment (which contained the defective rolls) while I was waiting for the 5 bad rolls to be returned. br>br>That replacement package of 5 rolls arrived yesterday, and all 5 rolls were completely devoid of the backing slit, so they were returned to Amazon as well! br>br>BTW, there are other issues with the backing paper, as other reviewers have pointed out: Many rolls do have delamination of the backing paper, which results in thin layers of tan paper on the tape that must be removed with a thumbnail, which is often difficult. Again, this is all evidence of a manufacturing process that is severely lacking in QA and QC! br>br>In conclusion, calling any of 3M's toll-free numbers has never resulted in any accountability, honesty, or satisfaction. free phone numbers, this time I asked 3M via Twitter WHY they haven't fixed the MAJOR QA issue yet. Given that so many reviewers have mentioned the problem over the years, and given that angry customers have even called their toll-free number, there may be QC issues with the backing paper on these rolls of tape. Free phone numbers to call if you have a problem. If 3M ever responds to my tweets with a reasonable response, only time will tell!
- br>So, the bottom line is that I continue to buy and use this tape, but since I've been burned before by late-discovered bad rolls, I now religiously inspect each order of tape as it arrives, partially unwrapping each roll to ensure that the backing/liner slit is present and deep enough.
- br>Here's what I had to say about it when I first saw it: This is incredible stuff. br> It appeals to me. I use this tape all the time, even though I don't work in contracting, construction, or home repair, and I'm always coming up with new ways to use it, both indoors and out! br>br>Over the last two years, I've purchased at least 5 rolls of this tape from Amazon because there are so many things I can use it for, such as sealing gaps along seams in walls of sheds, barns, chicken coops, and storage huts, and sealing seams and corners in buildings to prevent drafts and insect infiltration. That previous list, believe it or not, only covered about one-third of the total. third of the uses I've discovered for this tape, and I especially like the split liner because it makes precise positioning during application a breeze. br>br>The tape has a fantastic adhesive that sticks to almost anything for a long time. The backing tape is extremely flexible, stretchable, tough, and long-lasting. In fact, I'm tempted to type each of the aforementioned phrases. Because they are so noteworthy and useful, I've written them in ALL CAPS. br>br>There is no application for which I have tried to use this tape that has ever failed to work perfectly, and this includes really strange and unusual things like permanently sealing and repairing a minor crack in the wall of a 5 gallon flexible HDPE jug holding water while the container was full of water and the small crack was still leaking small amounts of water (in fact, I have used this tape to permanently repair minor leaks in the walls several times). I've also used this tape to seal a completely closed package. Despite constant exposure to weather, including sun (though there is some shading from trees), wind, rain, hail, ice, and snow, the exposed seam between two panels in the sloped plywood roof on a shed in my backyard has held up perfectly. br>br>I've also used this tape to seal around holes in which non-metallic materials are present. I've used metallic and metallic electrical conduit to seal long cracks (due to sun damage from 5 years of sun exposure) in the flexible clear plastic walls of a hoop-style hoop-style hoop-style hoop-style hoop-style hoop-style hoop-style hoop-style hoop-style hoop-style hoop-style hoop-style hoop-style hoop-style hoop-style h greenhouse of a particular design All of these applications work flawlessly with it. This tape comes highly recommended. br>br> Your imagination is the only limitation to what you can do with it.

Although this is a great product, it is not a 75' roll
4/5

After trying two other brands of hoist tape from local hardware stores, we decided to go with 3M. By a long shot, the 3M product is the best. Unlike other brands, this tape stretches and molds to the joists. It's thin, but it seems like it'll hold up just fine; I deducted a star because the roll can't possibly be 75' as described. At most, it'll be a 50-foot roll.

The release of backing tape is sticky, but inconsistent
4/5

Prior to wrapping the building with Tyvek, I'm using the 2" 3M 8067 to seal the joints of the OSB sheathing on the cabin I'm building, as well as the 6" width to seal the door and window openings. The tape is thin (like packing tape), but it is extremely strong. sticky. So far, it has withstood one rainstorm without flaking or peeling. It is less costly than a high-end product. Siga Wigluv and other end-of-building tapes br>br>The backing tape on 3M 8067 is finicky, so I didn't give it five stars. I had enough issues with the backing tape failing to peel cleanly that I would estimate that the job took me 20% longer to complete it. When the backing tape failed to release cleanly, it was always due to delamination at the center score. When this happened, I had to fold back the tape and dig out the unreleased paper with my fingernail. With some practice, I was able to both hear and feel when the backing tape began to delaminate, and then stop and fix it before it became too difficult to fix. It's best to pull the backing tape slowly and steadily, keeping the "peel line" perpendicular to the tape's edge. I noticed that some tape rolls had no issues with the backing tape, but that if a roll started out badly, it would continue to be problematic. Quality assurance that isn't consistent?.

" remove the layer of protection Please be aware- Only the peel is referred to as "tan. " remove the layer of protection In order to blend in with tan or medium brown decking, I bought this tape in the hopes that it would appear tan when used. Instead- It's milky/translucent and covered in BLACK print, which stands out a lot against the milky tape. It was both deceiving and disappointing. On the bright side, it's supposed to be self-contained. healing in the vicinity of fasteners.

It really sticks with you
5/5

This stuff adheres to every surface I've used it on. I've applied it to metal windows, a plastic carport cover, and even rolled roofing directly. However, I cannot guarantee that this will continue indefinitely. I'm hoping it lasts through the winter, which hasn't been particularly cold but has seen a number of days below freezing, and it has so far. I try to clean the surface as much as possible before applying it, but the biggest issue I've encountered is getting it where you want it before it sticks to something else or to itself. This is the weatherproof tape to use if you really need it to stick. It's more expensive than other options, but it's worth it. It needs to be covered with trim boards/roofing to last, and I've found that duct tape will keep it for at least a season. I've also discovered that it can withstand exposure to the elements for a long time without deterioration.
