Since I have been in the electrical industry for years, I have frequently used this model tester as one of the best units for testing an electrical circuit before it is installed. I bought a new one (I already have one in my tool box), because I had to go out of town on a work assignment, and my wife's outlet wasn't working. This device does not have any switches, dials, batteries, components, etc. It is virtually shockproof. For an amateur, I sent her this circuit tester to walk her through circuit tests. She was totally successful. Other than its low cost and availability, I chose this unit rather than a $10 tester that only displayed an indicator light, or a $20 multimeter because this was a 240v circuit, and I needed to make sure it was 240, not 240v on one leg only. In addition to its great value, this instrument also has a somewhat archaic voltage display. In order to move the needle on the scale, an electric solenoid is used, which draws a lot more current than a neon lamp or electronic meter, not being fooled by low current leaks that could cause a false positive on a conventional indicator lamp or meter. In addition, the solenoid also "buzzes" so you can "feel" the indication in a place where you might not be able to see I used to have one about 15 years ago, it's a bit battered, but it still works. There used to be a lifetime warranty on Ideal's test equipment, but I don't know if that still holds true today.
The 40 years I worked as a union electrician have seen me using this tool in one form or another. The vast majority of other countries have done the same. A good VOM meter can never be replaced by a 'wiggy', except in one instance. Safety is paramount. RF interference, ghost voltages, or induced voltages that turn out not to be there are not foolable to it. No matter if the voltage is AC or DC, the software will identify it for you, and its leads will always be plugged into the correct terminal, regardless of which voltage is present. It is no secret that voltage gets generated when that plunger moves by the solenoid. A solenoid can be felt in your hand and a scale can be seen that shows the voltage range in between the dots. Unlike earlier models, this one works well and is an evolution of generations of voltage testers. One is a must-have item for every electrician. Using this model's replaceable leads is a great feature.

A second replacement tester has been delivered to me, this time from two Amazon vendors. One package had already been opened while the other had not. As soon as we opened the package, we found our first tester had been burned out and was completely dead. As of now, the second tester dates back to Is this a reason why Amazon allows it?.
It is really nice to use, and I like how it feels. It's impossible for me to keep them going. Despite the excellent performance of the proximity tester, the unit just stops working. The battery was replaced, but it did not help. When I called Ideal to find out what was happening, I was able to determine the root cause of the problem. A customer service agent told me he would contact the engineers and that I would receive a phone I haven't heard from you yet. Truthfully, there are many years that I've held on to the ideal tester. The only kind I like to use. I have tried a few different types of testers and always return to my ideals. Since I now own my own company, I can provide my employees with ideal testers. One tool has the advantage of being a proximity and electric tester. Instead of purchasing two different tools, you can use one tool.
With a volt ohmeter that uses batteries, I have a very reliable meter I bought years ago. Although the ohmeter has served me well over the years, it has one disadvantage To prevent corrosion from building up in the meter, I have to remove the batteries after each use. Because batteries leak if they sit for an extended period of time, this is why the batteries need to be changed. Due to the fact that this test contains no batteries, the Volt-test Solenoid Voltage Tester does not have that problem. You can test the AC or DC current up to 660 volts with it. In order to indicate the presence of voltage, a buzzer and an indicator light are used. This tool is convenient to use, and when I'm done I can put it back into my tool drawer without worrying about the batteries leaking. I am glad I spent the money on it.

The device isn't a meter, so you won't be able to find out exactly what voltage you are dealing with, but you will be able to confirm whether you are working with 120, 220, or 277. You will feel a vibration and see an LED light. There is only one LED light on the continuity tester. Neither any noise or other indication is present, so you're solely relying on your eyes to identify the object. During testing, the test leads are protected by slidable sleeves, which slide back and spring forward when the sleeves are pulled back. When the sleeves are turned, they will not spring forward as quickly. Although the continuity tester is quite good, if I were buying another I would look for a tester that makes noise when it finds continuity, or with some leads that can be attached to alligator clips.

While the leads are long enough to reach into unsavory places, they are not so long as to cause a problem when carrying in the toolbox. The cables seem to have a thin neoprene insulation, so they feel a bit safer the next time you use high voltage (600v). The tester has both AC and DC scales from 120 up to 600, is sturdy with good tester probes and is both AC and DC compatible. There are no words to describe how much I appreciate it.
