Questions & Answers

Is there any way to tell the difference between this and the HS103?

Except for the shorter length and shallower depth, it appears to be the same as HS103. Both support up to 15A or 1800 watts, and I say OR because the HS103 can run at 240 volts. Most people don't realize that plug shape has nothing to do with voltage; in fact, you could convert plug shapes from 240 to 120 v (AMERICAN) and still run 240 through the hs103. I'm going to place an order and give it a shot because I can't find anything about it online.

What makes the "new wifi simple setup" different from the "classic mini"?

The pre-wiring of the plug is referred to as the new simple setup. configured in order to shorten the time it takes to set up.

What is the best way to get started? How do I set up an Amazon smart plug to work with the Kasa app?

The Kasa app is meant to be used in conjunction with Kasa products (i.e. Kasa smart plugs, smart bulbs, and other smart home devices). Kasa smart plugs can be used in conjunction with Alexa to provide voice control for your home.

Is the Kasa App required to operate the device? Or, once you plug it in, will it automatically connect to your Echo Dot?

While the app is required to set up and schedule the device, it will run on its own after that.

Because of recent firmware and KASA app updates, connecting plug to Alexa is no longer possible
3/5

After it was set up and working with the KASA app, I spent three hours trying to get Alexa to find this plug. After spending some time on the internet and in the KASA forums, I discovered that the new app and/or firmware prevents the plug from being used in any mode other than "local use. " Previous versions of Alexa could be set to remote use and then Alexa would find it. In the most recent version of the KASA app, that option is no longer available. Most posts from March 2019 appear to be affected by this new glitch. There is currently no solution (I did download the most recent firmware/software). The fact that Amazon has this listed as an "Amazons Choice" item is the source of my greatest annoyance. But I suppose it's just because the company has to pay them for a promotion. I have a number of Amazon-branded smart plugs that are all simple to set up and continue to work flawlessly.

THIS IS NOT AN AMAZON ADVERTISEMENT
3/5

Junk from a third party. This isn't an Amazon advertisement. It necessitates the installation of a third-party Vietnamese app and the provision of all of your personal information as well as your current location. It took over ten minutes for the outlets to connect, and then you had to use a third-party app to use them. The purpose of having this capability is to eliminate the need for me to use multiple apps. br>br>I've always bought the AMAZON plugs as a $5 add-on with other Amazon orders. I'm not sure why, but instead of an actual AMAZON plug, they sent me this piece of garbage. br>br>Don't waste your time, because it isn't the same.

If you're buying it to use with Alexa, you should be aware of the following
3/5

If you want to use it with Alexa, you'll need to create a second Kasa account, which will then allow you to link it to Alexa. br>br>It also employs an antiquated method of requiring you to use your cell phone to connect to the device via WIFI during configuration in order to set it up to communicate with your phone's WiFi network. br>br>I'm an IT guy, so while this stuff comes naturally to me, the setup failed several times before I restarted the device, and the setup process is excruciatingly slow when compared to Alexa devices. Instead, the Amazon smart plug may be a better option. I would have bought the Alexa plug to avoid having multiple online accounts if it hadn't been a promotional purchase.

Uses TP-Link to work with Home Assistant
5/5

Kasa integration is possible. I gave Alexa five stars because it integrates with my phone, but I don't use Alexa. I did connect these to the phone app, which worked perfectly, but I wasn't looking for remote control. I use the Home Assistant HA software to run automated scenes and schedules, and I can attest to the TP-Link's performance. These outlet/switches are compatible with Link Smart Home integration. With a main router and AI mesh WIFI extenders, my home is over 3500 square feet. The switch was discovered using the phone app, which was then added to the router. The TP- The device was added to Home Assistant after the Kasa integration was completed. I have ten of them, and they've all stayed online, connected to my network, and worked with Home Assistant without fail. These have taken the place of unreliable X10 modules that I had been using to turn candles on and off in windows for years, and they're now scattered throughout the house. After DHCP assigned an IP address, I manually locked it and bound each switch to the nearest WIFI access point for increased reliability.

Purchase is not recommended
3/5

To begin with, it is enormous; it only has one outlet plug but is a monster. Second, you'll need to download yet another app, ostensibly to manage this single massive outlet hog. Third, it is expensive when compared to competitors. br>I haven't seen anything else that this app could use to justify taking up space on my phone. br>br>I'm not sure why Amazon is pushing this when you should get a Belkin Wemo instead, which can control everything in your house and save you time from having to download yet another app for a single monster of a plug. br>br>I didn't set it up to test it because I already have a Belkin that works perfectly and I didn't want to waste my time and effort on this.

WARNING: If you don't agree to the new terms, KASA will attempt to kidnap your smart devices
3/5

Because I am disabled, I rely on these devices, as well as three smart switches that I purchased a year ago, to turn on the lights in my home. There was no mention of the fact that purchasing these items does not grant you ownership. NOW, after promoting the App "service" as being free and allowing you to use and activate the products from your smartphone, they are attempting to change the terms so that you do not own them. They're also changing the terms to charge you for the APP, and they're explicitly stating in a warning message that if you don't agree to their hostage terms, you must close your account and stop using them (the APP will almost certainly lock you out if you do). This is consumer fraud perpetrated by corporations. The end result isn't particularly impressive. It frequently fails to function for no apparent reason. I have high-speed digital fiber optic internet, as well as current-generation state-of-the-art wifi, computers, and phones, all of which perform poorly and frequently fail to turn on at the scheduled times.
