Can you tell me the size of the cable?

The wire I used it for was barbed wire, so I expect it can handle up to 1/4" and maybe 3/8" wire, but I wouldn't use it for anything larger.

This gripper doesn't hold cable, and the price is great, but I did not have success

There is no way to grip a 5/16 in cable with this. Even though it looks sturdy, it just doesn't grip, which causes the cable to slip through.

For use with larger cables only? As stated in the other reviews, the wire gap does not grip in the wire sizes it is accustomed to gripping
