(Update after almost a year) The lights are a lot brighter than anticipated. The Feb. update is now available. are very pleased with these skylights, and we have not experienced any issues even during hot, rainy, and snowy days. The product is good and I would purchase it In no way do they create a "drafty" feeling. In winter, I notice the snow does not melt as quickly on them as it does on the rest of the roof. (This means very little or no heat escapes through the skylight. ) I highly recommend this book. This is the original review (see below) Having purchased five of these last fall (2019), I just got around to installing them have been extremely pleased with the quality of light in the areas where they were installed. As others have noted, "brighter than expected" and it makes you feel like you have left the lights As a handy person, I would rate myself as "handy" with tools and can perform some light home maintenance and repairs. This was not the first time I had to get over my fear of cutting a large hole in my roof, in this case I had to do it five It takes three times as long to learn how to do a job than to do the second one, as with a lot of things. When I lived in a single-level house, I had good access to my attic It was possible to get to every location in the attic and on the roof, where we would install skylights, because it is a two-story home. As a result, I was able to remove the insulation first and use that access to cut the ceiling drywall from above rather than below. This wasn't an easy task but this access will allow for more job efficiency. Surely there was nothing between the rafters and I had no obstructions to deal with. Furthermore, I had my roof shingles replaced at the same time, so I also had the opportunity to do the prep work earlier, "dry fit" these skylights, and then have the roofers install the roof part of these skylights after the shingles are installed. These instructions are very good, in color, and easy to read. On Friday, I called Customer Service twice (once in the morning, again later in the afternoon) and got a courteous, prompt response (was never held on hold) and help regarding my minor concerns. The manufacturer of this product (I'm not talking about the seller here) provides outstanding customer service. Here is one thing to keep in mind There was slight damage to two of the five units around the ring or top collar of the flashing part that goes on the roof from shipping. Despite being made of heavy aluminum, this piece had been slightly deformed while being shipped. Make sure to examine each item carefully after receiving it. When it was installed, I did not notice the damage because it was minor. If the company wants to ship this area better, it should consider padding it better. My theory is that the dome, which has an additional metal ring around it, got pushed into the flashing in the box and slightly deformed it. After I tapped it back to "round", it appeared to be near-normal With a hammer and with hand force, give it a round. As of installation, it seams to have worked well with the plastic dome. It's still a good day for me. My first attempt at assembly of the aluminum tubes was a bit challenging. (at least it did for me), and the second one will get faster as you learn more. In addition to incorporating a jigsaw with a metal-clad blade, I discovered I could Cut the vent pipe neatly to the desired length with the cutting blade. I was able to do this without using tin snips and it was much faster. Use your hacksaw to cut a small starter slot for your jigsaw. Place the jigsaw in the opening Using snips to trim the tubes to size on the roof, as well as from below for example (since the tube should not need to be stopped from below as the center ring is pretty tight) worked better for me than using the instructions. You don't have to worry if you mess up the perfect- In the mirror, there is a sparkle- While working with the tube, you may notice how the interior looks a little familiar. Once your home has been installed, you'll never notice it, and a few dust particles and fingerprints will not seriously interfere with the light's transmission. I hope this helps someone else as well. The skylights did not leak when we had our first thunderstorm the other night, so I'll update you if there are any issues!.
It was excellent quality at a good price. No problems were encountered after following the very detailed installation instructions. Looking at the instructions, I conclude that DIY wasn't hard 35 years ago for me, as long as I knew how and what to use. The light tube and small skylight in the bigger kitchen were replaced with two units one for the kitchen and one for the dining area. An efficient system is one that is highly effective. If you want to modify accessories, such as a remote controlled intensity adjuster or a night light, you should consult the manufacturer's website. It costs half as much as branded models [Velox] but comes with a 25 year warranty and does the job just.
The purpose of buying it is to use it as a windowless bathroom. An air vent on the ceiling had failed. This roofer/electrician had never installed this brand before but was able to do the work in about three hours After about 1 1/2 hours, I also bought the vent accessory kit from the There is no noise coming from the fan. When the sun is out, the lighting is amazing. There is no need for light to be on in daylight anymore, saving electricity and since electricity prices in California are outrageously high, that is an absolute priority.
They produce an incredible amount of light and they lose very little heat, unlike skylights, and they are easier to seal up on the roof side compared with skylights.
If I had to take away a full star, I would have just just taken off a quarter of it, because one of the light pipes came with slightly bent edges so I had to manipulate it and force it together, and eventually just use foil tape to keep it together. As opposed to the other one, this one did not snap shut as easily. As well as- My instructions were followed to the letter, but I discovered that there was A SECOND ROOF I needed to tackle- It was not the fault of the manufacturer and there is no way that I could have known. There was just just a few inches to account for, but it required some crawling around in attic and securing a nail up thru a second roof to decide make matters worse, I discovered I had to maneuver around rafters going north to south AND perpendicular! However, I wish I would have put in the tube first and finished cutting the hole in my ceiling once the tube and ring were matched up. As a result of this sequence of events, I added about 3 hours to the installation time, but I will be able to install the tube very quickly next time. If you run into someone like Mr. Murphy, it won't be hard to install ceiling, but otherwise it looks nice and I'm going to get another one.
There is a lot of light in this room and I like that. On a hot summer afternoon I would like to be able to control the amount of light coming in, as well as the amount of heat coming in.
It has changed a lot since then.
I find this lighting system to be awesome. The light it emits fills our living room with a brilliant glow. We had installed a new 2400 Watt LED light fixture several months earlier, and it was not as bright on sunny days. It never fails that we think we left the light on whenever we walk by the doorway! In fact, it provides a surprising amount of light even on overcast days. We had a contractor friend do the installation, and the process took him less than an hour. The course took him 5 hours, despite the fact that he had never been on Instructions that are clear and concise.
