The flashing oxidizes, which allows rain to wash down the roof and kill any mold that has grown around the shingles. At least, that's what it's supposed to be used for. As such, it has proven to be extremely effective for me. However, I believe you could paint it if you cleaned and primed it first. After that, a couple of top coats on the exterior.
It will be attracted to a magnet.
That's exactly what I did with it, tucking it beneath the drip edge.
I couldn't use it because it was too thick - It is difficult to bend.

This was purchased for Christmas gifts that would be embellished with vinyl and wood. It performs admirably. It was simple to cut and bend the material in the way we needed it to protect receivers from the razor-sharp edges. As a result, the edges are unmistakably jagged!.
This was purchased to cover the top of a 2 x 10 beam that had been sistered. I didn't want water to run down between the boards and rot them. After purchasing this, I was disappointed to learn that it is not intended for use with pressure treated lumber. In any case, I used it. We'll see how things go.
