Questions & Answers

What are the materials used to make the tiles?

Styrofoam is used to create them. They're not made of paper - they're made of steel. They're of excellent quality for use as ceiling decorations - However, if not handled carefully, they are prone to dents, making them unsuitable for walls that may be bumped or dinged.

Is it possible to put these in a grid for a drop ceiling?

They are not going to do so. not. Because they are thin foam tiles with an odd dimension for a standard grid ceiling, they should be directly attached to a hard ceiling.

Is it possible to use these on a covered porch (in Florida)?

I believe they would work; we live in Florida and have them in both bathrooms with no problems! Just make sure you use a good glue! It's simple to put them together! Our Lanai now has bamboo fencing, which looks fantastic! It's also a bit less expensive than tiles!

Is it necessary to prime the tiles before applying a coat of water-based flat paint? Is it permissible to use these in a room with a fireplace?

We didn't use a primer and instead used a water-based semi-gloss. They're in my kitchen, but they're not near a source of heat. They're foam, which means they're likely to catch fire.

Selected User Reviews For A La Maison Ceilings R30 Kensington Gardens Foam Glue-up Ceiling Tile (21.6 sq. ft./Case), Pack of 8, Plain White

If you're willing to put in the extra effort, this is a fantastic opportunity! I'm pleased with the result after installing 135 of these foam tiles on our kitchen ceiling, but I'm not sure they're right for everyone
4/5

br>Even though I read the reviews before purchasing them, I was surprised at how thin and light the tiles are. They have the appearance and feel of a fast food container box, but they are decorative, and I just couldn't bring myself to permanently adhere them to my ceiling with caulk. If we ever wanted to take them down, we'd have to destroy the ceiling. I decided to try my hand at painting one and knew right away that I had made the right choice. I've included photos of them both painted and in the process of painting. I used a small 3/8" roller and good interior semi-gloss paint. paint with a high gloss finish Decorator White by Behr, one thin coat covered well, but two coats looked fantastic! They now have more structure and a great finish thanks to the paint. Yes, I rolled 135 tiles by hand. Totally worth the effort!br>Even after painting them, I didn't want to caulk them to the ceiling because I didn't see the point. I purchased several rolls of double sided tape ($10/30ft) and used small pieces of tape on each time; the light duty tape had a 10 pound rating, so these tiles will not come off by accident! I've included a picture of where the tape was applied. br>I started by removing our chandelier, as it was the focal point, and then worked my way out. This product does not receive a 5-star rating from me. They aren't the same size on both sides, so they're given stars. To put it another way, it isn't a true square. Although the difference is minor (less than a sixteenth of an inch), I found that rotating the tiles 90 degrees was necessary to ensure that the tiles lined up properly across the ceiling. Most of the tiles had remnants of the perforated edge from the manufacturing process on two sides, which I smoothed out with a foam sanding block. It was a quick, but crucial, step. To finish it off and fill in any small gaps, I had to caulk the seams. Although the tiles are well-made, there are minor differences in their sizes. br>At the end of the day, the ceiling is absolutely stunning. br>I wanted to avoid repairing nail pops and drywall seams as much as possible. I also wanted to add some character to the ceiling without going overboard, and I believe I succeeded in both of these goals. The paint and caulked seams hide the fact that the ceiling is actually foam, and I'm glad I installed them every time I look up. br>In conclusion, buy them if you're willing to put in the time to paint, sand, and caulk them. If you intend to use them as-is, don't purchase them. We purchased several designs so that we could see them in person before purchasing 17 boxes. Some were ornate with depth of character, while others were more straightforward. We chose one that we thought would add character to the ceiling without being distracting.

Excellent choice
5/5

This set of tiles is fantastic. When I first opened them, I was a little nervous because they are about the thickness of takeout containers, as other reviews have described. I painted the surface and let it dry for a few days before putting it together. Following that, I used Loctite instant grab glue according to the directions. I waited until the next day to let the glue cure after gluing it in place. After that, I caulked around the edges of the wall and between them. After allowing the caulk to cure, I painted the ceiling with a good water-based paint. The ceiling is extremely attractive. It's been up and running for about two months. I am completely satisfied with the product and would highly recommend it. br>br>Just a PSA - Before accepting delivery, inspect the exterior box for any damage; these are light and can easily be damaged until installed.

Best low- You'll come across an end solution for a ceiling
5/5

I'm not sure why these have such negative reviews. They're styrofoam squares that are incredibly thin and light, and they're a simple low-cost option. Finishing a ceiling in this manner is the last option. These were used in our basement kitchen, which is uneven and unlevel (to put it mildly). Oh, and there was a huge patch from previous plumbing work that needed to be taped, muddled, and sanded as well. We didn't want to deal with any of that, so we simply slapped these over the patched area and the rest of the ceiling in a matter of hours. They were simple to trim and apply (we used light duty (10lb) mounting tape). We didn't paint them, but I think they'd look even better if they were.

It has the appearance of plaster and is simple to apply
5/5

We rolled ours with flat latex ceiling paint before putting it up, and it turned out great. The tiles are thin and easy to scribe and cut to fit walls and light cutouts, and once painted and adhered to the ceiling, they resemble plaster. Handle them with care, as they easily dent. br>br>I did a combustion test on them. And I discovered that if you glue a heavy rolled coat of latex paint to sheetrock, it will burn when a torch is held to it, but it will go out as soon as the flame is removed. It's very useful to be aware of this. When the flame is removed from them, they stop burning even if they are not mounted on sheetrock. This is acceptable to me because many fire-rated materials behave similarly.

With a few finishing touches, it's perfect
4/5

I expected hard panels because the description said PVC - but I was wrong. This is made of foam. It took a little more glue than I anticipated, but they were simple to put together - Seam strips and crown molding were also installed by me. They were all different shades of white, of course. As a result, I had to paint them all to make them look like they belonged together - Now it appears to be perfect. They are still quite costly.

It appears to be of good quality, but it is a little on the expensive side
5/5

They're exactly what they say they're going to be. If you want them to look like they're made of styrofoam, I recommend painting them white. They're lightweight and simple to set up. I used a caulk gun to apply liquid nails. Easy peasy, but I believe you should get 20 or so for the price, so I don't like the price, and it isn't made of expensive materials. Styrofoam that has been embossed. They look great when painted white and add a touch of class to any room.

It's simple to assemble
5/5

During the remodeling process, we had to remove a portion of this ceiling. Glued these right on top of the drywall! Now that it's been painted blue, all that's left is to finish the trim! We've used these a lot and really like how they look and how simple they are to work with! The only suggestion is to not press too hard on the raised areas, as this will cause them to flatten; be gentle!.

It's lovely
5/5

If you don't want to spend a lot of money or time fixing a broken ceiling, these tiles are the way to go. They're surprisingly sturdy for foam tiles, and they can be installed without the use of a drop ceiling using adhesive. It's also very simple to do on your own.
