For doorways and other usage, it would be a good idea to order 12 boxes, rather than eight. I didn't order enough the first time, plus I had to order a similar color since the color I needed didn't appear in stock. A bit of sticky on the back comes off on the backing paper as well. In case you need to replace any of the leftovers, you will have them left over.
My impression is that it would not stick to existing carpets
Hard surface with a smooth finish. The padding method will not work.

(I needed a cover for the shelves that my cat climbs on so he can grip the shelf better. ), and the beige seemed like a good choice. However, you need to be careful when putting them down. Although they are pretty sticky, if you take them off there is an extra layer of glue that can be difficult to take off. Secondly, the carpet itself might stretch, so a very clean look with tiles would be if you used lines as a guide. If you do it by "feel," some of the squares might be stretched a bit and have a longer period of time to install.
We found that it was well made and very easy to use. The shelves I put up for my cat need padding to protect them. I bought these for that purpose. This rug has both the perfect pile length and glue for perfect adhesion. Short nap and just the right amount of adhesive. They are not plush, but they do have nice ridgelines that are easy to measure, mark, and cut to size with an X-acto blade This blade acts as a stopper.
These carpet tiles are perfect for cat shelves, as previous reviewers have stated. Despite just being small piles, the cats found them to be very easy to cut with scissors and were secure while climbing.
We were not sure that the surface of the shelves would be smooth because the carpet is quite thin, like felt, but we were afraid that we would have to build "cat shelves" for our climbing kittens. It is easy to manipulate these carpet squares, and they are ideal for adding a little texture. We would recommend them for cat toys, although we don't know if they would hold up well on the ground.
A piece of crap. They were thin and flimsy. Home Depot is the best place to go.
These toys are a hit with cats.
Put a tile on the wall to replace the carpeted area. There is a good sense of sticking to them, and they feel nice to hold. You can cut the fabric to any size or shape you want. As they are fairly thin, I do not know how they would do in an area with high traffic. Any surface that's clean and flat would likely stick well to them.
I have so far had a good experience.
