When retrieving another vehicle from the hook side, how far down should the damper be lowered?

Depending on how much cable you had to let out, I always go 15 feet from the shackle hook. If it breaks, it can still hit your rig if you only put it halfway on cable. Always make sure that the damper you're using is angled in the direction of the object you're pulling. Is it possible to use this with kinetic recovery straps or nylon?

It's a damper that you can use with whatever you're pulling. I have steel cable, and depending on how far away you're pulling, you may want to use two for added safety.

How much of a factor should this be? I have an old laptop bag similar to this that will hold the weight and wrap around the cable nicely. ?

The issue is that you may lose weight if you fall.

Is a steel cable winch compatible with this setup?

Yes, anything heavy enough draped over the steel cable should be able to slow it down enough to avoid injury or death. pay attention to the warnings winch tips (snatch); Don't put too much pressure on yourself, and stay to the side.

A possible lifesaver

This is something I recently purchased, and it works perfectly! I installed a rope on my winch and it snapped while spooling. The rope slid down to the ground without causing any harm. So, for $30, I've decided that this is a no-brainer. At least, that's how it feels to me.

This is a good value for a safety product; it's a fairly basic product at a reasonable price, and it's not just for use if your cable breaks

The straps or cable on your winch can slip and become a hazard if you're pulling something into or out of the bed of a pickup truck. My straps slipped, but the damper slowed the cable and kept me from getting hurt. It's well worth the money, and it's well-made.
