Not bad at all

Due to the J-shaped hole in my wall, it wouldn't sit flush with the wall and I had to return it because it wouldn't fit The Nest thermostat comes with a mounting plate for the box. This image is not colored and the outer edge is not sharp. That is why it is only given 3 stars.

Product looks raw and is of poor quality

Probably only a plasma cutter would be used to cut this metal. Neither the metal nor the finish are finished. Another side of the package was wrapped in packing tape. Packaging tape was firmly adhered to the metal, and it could not be removed. Although it would be okay (I guess) if it were placed in your garage, it would be less acceptable in a living room unless you want to look trashy.

Is that true? I made a simple piece of stainless steel with 5 holes (flat disk)

If you mount it with the Nest mounting base, the disk sticks out from the wall (the thickness of the Nest mounting base is not visible in the images). The CD looks like it. The outside edge of the plate needs to be rounded so it sits flush against the wall. My purchase of this item was not worth it.

It looks as though the aluminum plate is made of crude aluminum

This is very thin and looks like a homemade aluminum cut. While I did manage to accomplish the task, I had to use just the top and bottom screws through the holes in the nest wire base.
