In the end, this coil turned out to be a good buy at only $10. In building a metal smelting furnace, I burned up coils from a heater I found in a ditch after getting through all the coil design hiccups. Then I picked one of these up and threw it Since I wanted the coil to operate at 240v, I cut off a few feet to get about 28 ohms resistance. A furnace was fired up and their chamber temperature was held at 1080 degrees Celsius. When I was bringing it up to temperature, I oscillated it on and off at a 50% duty cycle. In light of the fact that I ordered 2 more, I will try a 100% duty cycle warmup. In the following edit, I worked on it a bit When heated up to 1100°C they get very brittle but they do work well for their price provided they are not heated to that temperature.
