Slightly less than 15/16" (between 14/16" and 15/16") is the height of the base square area. Note the elevated inner square (as seen in the Amazon photo) that is slightly less than 7/16" inside the outer square's top edge. That square measures slightly more than 1/8" in height. The base square's INNER height is just under 3/4". I hope this has been of assistance.

The black screws that come with the Iron Ball Post Cap are a nice touch. Our son used wood and black brackets to construct a simple, sturdy handrail for our basement. The Ball Post Cap is a great complement to the handrail and looks great both inside and out.
I wouldn't do it because you'd need matching paint and I'm sure you'd leave the grinders alone. However, the lettering looks nice, like art deco.

They had to be tough and adaptable (we're powder coating the handrails and post caps to match). These are exactly what I needed. They fit perfectly on our 4"x4" posts. We had given our posts time to dry, which could explain why they were easier for us than for other reviewers who complained of a tight fit, possibly due to wet or green wood. The aluminum pour quality into the cast is a little rough, but this only affects the inside of the cast where you can't see it, but it could cause some fitting issues for some. After our posts are painted and all of the metal work is powder coated, I'll try to remember to post an update. I wish there was a flat-lay to go with it. Because the level step design on this base, in my opinion, is not stylistically complimented by a pyramid or flat top pyramid post cap, I chose a topped square post cap for alternating or tight spaces. Overall, I think it's a good idea to buy it.
I purchased two of these to replace the white pyramidal sheet metal caps that had been on the 4x4 posts supporting our 1870 cemetery sign. These, unlike the white caps, do not provide a home for insects, and they appear to have been there since 1870. They'll fit the 4x4s perfectly, and I'm confident they'll be there when I move into the cemetery permanently, hopefully in a few years. I orientated them so that you don't see the maker's name when reading the sign, but to be honest, you don't notice it.
I replaced all five with these cast iron post caps, and "voila" - the job was done. In under 30 minutes, you'll have an upgrade! Thrilled! My mother, on the other hand, can grab these post caps as she begins to climb the stairs, making it much more stable for her. It was well worth the money.
These were on the railings of a resort where we stayed. Very nice, good weight, and screws into the posts. Because our railings are black steel, the only criticism is that the black is more of a black brown. However, you won't be able to tell the difference in color once you've put it on.
High- I'm installing several gates and initially purchased a less expensive gate post cap, but after using this one, I'm going to use it on the rest of my gate posts. Yes, it's more expensive, but it's also more beautiful, more detailed, and appears to be handcrafted. It's especially appealing if you live in an antique home. My only wish is that NUVOIRON had not been stamped on both sides of the cap, leaving the other two sides for set screws. Nuvo Iron employees, it's more classy to omit the company's name. On a big box 4 x 4, I had to hammer (or sand/chisel) the sides of the post because it was such a tight fit.
It's well-made and looks fantastic on the stairwell posts.
I needed a handhold to help me descend the two stairs off my deck. This was exactly what I was looking for.
There isn't much else to say about the product; it's a ball post cap.
