sort of. Although the filter does not appear to be identical to the original 4396508 that I was using, I was able to install it. My refrigerator is a side-by-side 106 Kenmore (actually Whirlpool). (53332300) was purchased in 2003. I was concerned about the negative feedback about this filter not working, so I contacted the company and requested a response, which I will include in my review. I've attached a photo of the manufacturer's information on my filter package, and as you can see from Whirlpool's response, 3M filters may be a problem for older refrigerators.
- Thank you for contacting Whirlpool Consumer Direct Sales via our website. br>I am happy to answer any questions you may have about water filters. br>You are correct; the EDR5RXD1 water filter is your replacement. Having said that, we've noticed that older refrigerator models in the 8- to 10-year range aren't as energy efficient as newer models. One of our newer filters has had some issues with a 10 year old range or older. We have two manufacturers for this filter, and we've found that one will work and the other will be extremely difficult to install with these models. It is possible, but extremely difficult, and our engineers are working on a solution. If you order directly from us, our warehouse will ship whatever they have in stock, and we have no say in which one they send. If you're buying a filter in a store, you'll be able to tell which one you're getting. The words "manufactured for Whirlpool" are located on the bottom left side of the box, followed by the words "by. " The manufacturer will either be Kemflo or 3M. If you examine the old filter you've been using, you'll notice that it's either flat at the top or has cut-out notches. One of these two filters should be the same as the one you've been using. I believe it is the Kemflo model that is compatible with older models. br>We have a 30-day return policy and a 90-day warranty, so if you order over the phone and it doesn't work, we'll replace it. We simply don't know which one the warehouse will ship as of right now. We are working on a better solution for you and will let you know as soon as possible. Please accept my sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused you. br>I appreciate you sending me an email. Good luck with your day. br>If you have any further questions or concerns, you can contact our retail parts department at 1-888-888-888-888. 800- 901- 2042 and select the water filtration option from the drop-down menu. Monday through Friday, from 8 a. m. to 5 p. m. , we are open. 00 a. to 8: 00 p. br>You are a valued Whirlpool customer, and we appreciate your continued support of the Whirlpool Brand; thank you for allowing us to assist you today. Wishing you a pleasant day! br>With sincere gratitude,br>Billie P. br>Whirlpool Consumer Direct Salesbr>br>- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - br>The reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because I find it very upsetting that there is a manufacturing issue where you can't know if the filter will fit until you get it from any online source, including Whirlpool! I never had to worry about that with the original filter because it worked every time. I sincerely hope Whirlpool takes this seriously and addresses this engineering problem as soon as possible.

- br>New Update: The filter I purchased on Amazon was made in Mexico. My refrigerator had small water leaks at the dispenser for the first 6 months after it was installed, despite the fact that I was able to install it (it had a rounded top). It was minor, or I would have changed the filter sooner, but it was still inconvenient given that it was supposed to be the correct one. Now I have the correct filter, which I had to pay more money for in town, and which is made by Kemflo and has the notches on top and fits properly. Because of the issue with two manufacturers making this same filter differently, causing fit and use issues, I reduced my rating to two stars. br>br>Basically, if you buy this filter online, you'll never know which one you'll get.

NSF/ANSI Standards 401, 53, and 42 are all met! WATER QUALITY AND SAFETYbr>I have a 2005 Whirlpool refrigerator and was looking for a filter that met NSF and ANSI standards for removing contaminants rather than just improving taste
5/5

I had a hard time determining whether this filter met the standards because the only information I could find said it was NSF certified but did not list the specific standards or claims under each standard. This meets NSF/ANSI 42 for taste ("aesthetic effects"), 53 for "health effects," and "I'm attaching a photo of the NSF certification on the package that I received, but you can (and should) verify the certification and standards claimed by Whirlpool by searching for the filter on the NSF website under Whirlpool's old model number NL240V. I was concerned about Atrazine (a pesticide that I discovered in my water) and lead. br>br>FILTER COMPATIBILITYbr>According to several reviews, part 4396508 is not compatible with this filter. My replacement part was listed as 4396508 in my Whirlpool manual, and it fits. On the Whirlpool website, I checked compatibility by entering my model number. My filter's top looked identical to the previous owner's (which was a 4396508). I'm not sure if there are any fakes or bad batches out there, but I purchased mine directly from Amazon rather than from a third-party seller. OTHER NOTESbr>*Replacing the filter has greatly improved the flow of my water. *Four gallons of water must be flushed- a lot- Before you use it for the first time, run it through the filter. br>*Every six months, replace the filter.

While this fit our Kitchenaid refrigerator, the water tasted awful and I'm not sure if it's a genuine product
3/5

We've been using it for over a month and haven't seen any improvement, despite the fact that we've filtered hundreds of gallons of water through it. You can taste a distinct glue-like flavor in a glass of water if I leave it sitting for a couple of hours. like a bitter lemon flavor at first For the time being, I've switched back to bottled water and am filling the ice bin with store-bought ice. This "better" filter was purchased to help a family member with immune issues reduce contaminants. I'm worried that by using this filter, this person will become even sicker! The taste is still there after flushing and cleaning the entire refrigerator water system without the filter and then reinstalling it. This is a filter that I do not recommend. I would definitely return this item if I hadn't thrown out the original box. In addition, I had no idea I was purchasing the filter from an appliance store. I should've double-checked that it came straight from Whirlpool. I'm not sure if that was a contributing factor, but this filter is garbage.

Two filters in a row have had a persistent bad taste and odor in the water
3/5

We installed the filter we had stored for six months and our subscription renewed, so we had one on the shelf. Our normal procedure is to install a filter and then buy a filter so that there is a new one waiting for the next time. The water tasted flat for the first few days after we replaced the old Pur brand filters, but then it was fine, and the Pur filter effectively cut the chlorine taste. This new Drop brand has a strong odor that reminds you of cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cabbage. ) was immediately noticeable, and the water had a stale taste to it. We dumped the one we had installed after it sat for six months and replaced it with the most recent subscribe and save purchase because the difference was so noticeable. We gave it a week because there was still a strange odor, but it wasn't as bad as before. However, the odor and flavor remained the same. I simply removed the filter and ran enough water through the refrigerator to clear the pipes, and the odor and taste are no longer present. Whirlpool, you made a bad decision. I'm not going to buy any more of your certified filters, and I'm not going to buy another Whirlpool refrigerator either. The filtered cold water was a big plus for us. For the time being, I suppose we'll have to make do with cold water.
