In addition, I made one improvement so that it was more functional and readily accessible. My ski pole shaft received a hole in the corner that I drilled with a drill so that I could zip tie the inclinometer to it. I can quickly determine the slope angle by using my pole in this manner. Thanks to it, you can easily gauge every slope quickly, and all of my backcountry partners ask me to use it whenever they have questions. It would be good to buy it again and maybe the company will incorporate my modification to make it better for everyone.
It has snowflake sizing grids on the back, a curved base that fits ski poles, bubble height measurement (not very accurate, but the intended purpose) and clearly marked avalanche danger zones. The zipper bag is well-made and can easily be attached to a zipper if you like. It is also very inexpensive.
During the winter I like to mount the inclinometer onto my ski pole when checking the slope and I wish there were some piece of Velcro I could attach to it. While holding it on the pole with cold hands (I wasn't wearing gloves since I was afraid of fumbling it and dropping it in a foot of snow), it is a bit tricky. To protect it in case it is dropped, I will attach it to a long string or lanyard as a "powder cord. ".
It is a nice looking incline gauge, but the keychain is not as durable as it could be. The snowmobile key I put on it broke off as soon as I went for a ride and it was long gone when I got back, which was a bummer for me as I needed 6 feet of snow fell on us and there are 40 miles of mountains I'll never be able to locate.
On a traverse, this unit has inclinometer and scale on one side of the device, making use of the inclinometer cumbersome when pointing the wrong way. I will purchase a better device.
It was great to see some photos and instructions from goeksfam. Hands down, this is the best way to use this product.
This tool is useful for determining slopes going up from left to right while going up from the right, but the instructions say you'll need a companion to measure slopes going up from the right. I think this is such a poor design that a couple of small changes could have greatly improved it The level and markings should be visible in the front and back, but as it stands, it can be tricky to use if you are on your own.
The results are compact and accurate. Here's hoping I'm not going to die.
