Four pairs of ski poles were easily held. So, first and foremost:br>1) This was my first time installing a ski roof rack;br>2) This was installed on the integrated cross-bar system. bars on a 2016 Subaru Outbackbr>br>I bought this rack for four reasons in particular. br>1) To support a Colorado companybr>2) Because the mounting system appeared to be well designed, including security, ease of installation, and durability,br>3) Because the racks appear to be a bit more aerodynamic, thus hopefully fuel efficient and quiet. br>4) It was less expensive than other well-known brands, but not at the expense of quality. br>br>The good: br>The racks themselves are extremely sturdy; they aren't made of cheap plastic and have a noticeable weight and strength. So far, I've only used them to drive two cars. On highways with top speeds of around 70 miles per hour, it takes 5 hours each way. I had four sets of skis and poles on them, and when I got to the hill and then back home, I checked the rack: They were rock solid, with no slipping, loosening, or movement in the mounting system. I didn't notice any differences in the way the car drove, and the added wind noise from the crossbars, rack, and skis was barely audible. After years of competing in rowing and strapping expensive boats to trailers, I prefer the mounting system's design to most others because it more closely resembles how I used to strap boats to trailers. The system appeared to provide a more secure fit than most others, as well as being easier to install and maintain. br>br>My only gripe with the whole thing was the mounting system; many of the issues could have been avoided with better documentation and a few design tweaks. The documentation is mostly pictures, which is great except for the fact that I couldn't figure out how to attach and mount things on the car in the right order. If they had included a link to a video on the internet, it would have alleviated some of my initial annoyance. The key is to loosely attach the mounting brackets to the racks before attaching them to the cross bars. Tighten the ski rack to the mounting brackets after the mounting brackets are tightened to the cross bars. br>br>My only quibble is with the design. There is no threading where the mounting brackets connect to the ski rack. Instead, they use a square nut to thread the threads. What evidence do I have that this is true? Because the critical nut without which the ski rack cannot be secured to the mounting brackets fell out of two of the mounting brackets while I was figuring out the best way to attach the racks. It appeared to be a standard part that could be replaced at any hardware store, but it seems like poor design that a critical and small component that shouldn't be removed could simply fall out.
I'd been doing a lot of research on those "budget" ski racks, and this one finally caught my eye because the price had dropped to $110. So, rather than the other cheap $99 racks, why not spend an extra ten dollars on something that SEEMS to be better? At the very least, it has its own website, a genuine brand logo, and is based in the United States. So, I went ahead and did it, and YES BABY, IT IS JUST PERFECT AS I EXPECTED! It's built to last, the key doesn't fall out, it's made of high-quality materials, and it works flawlessly. br>br>What's more, the best part is that it's all for free. Right out of the box, it was compatible with the Euro track mount, complete with all necessary tools and screws! So you won't have to use the cheap ones' exposed screw plastic clamps, and your racks won't be stolen. Even if you don't have an Euro track rail, the additional foot pack uses the cable tight system, and the entire system is secured with locks and no exposed screws! br>br>Installation is a little difficult (as everyone says), but I'm confident in my abilities and don't mind. This system is extremely secure, which is why it will not be stolen. It took me 30 minutes to finish! br>br>That's all there is to it. Amazing value for the money; if you ever see it for less than $150, grab it! Don't even consider it! You've already invested enough time in your research. It's either the posh Thule, Yakima, or THIS, as far as I'm concerned.
Two of the mounts are missing. br>br>For the price, it appears to be fairly solid, but there are some flaws, such as the presence of two logos on each rack. Perhaps that is industry standard, but I would prefer only one logo per rack. Furthermore, the top half of the rack does not sit flush with the bottom half of the rack (as shown in the photo). br>br>The good thing about these racks is that they are black and come with a solid lock. br>br>However, if you apply pressure to the top 1/2 of the bar, it sits flush and gives the same semicircular appearance as the other side. br>br>.
There is only one issue. The bolts provided to hold the ski carrier onto the roof rack T-shaped for my Yakima roof racks The slots are just a smidgeon too short; an extra 1/8" of length would make a huge difference. With the aforementioned, Because of the short bolts, installation into the T-shape is a tight squeeze. slot. But there's a bigger issue: The bolts can't be threaded far enough into the T-slot's slide nut. slot. The entire mounting "hangs by a thread" as a result of this. So far, there haven't been any issues, but it appears to be a recipe for disaster.
It's simple to set up, safe, and quiet on the highway. Unlike vertically shaped ski racks, there is no hiss. It's also a lot less difficult to set up than a Yakima. WAY BETTER VALUE THAN THULE OR YAKIMA. Same as the oval Yakimas but 20% at 20% a lower price. I'll never buy Yakima or Thule rack components again because they're ridiculously expensive.
Obviously, there are some excellent ski racks in the $300 range from Kuat and Thule, but at that price point, a cargo box is almost a better option. br>br>This appears to be one of the better ski racks available for less than $200. There was also enough space for my bicycle rack.
This was a great deal for me. I'm so glad I found it!.
No mounting equipment or keys came with the two mounts. It was obvious that the package had been opened before.
