It is true. It is common practice to put the metal shield on the outside of the wheel so that it protects the bearings from being contaminated by outside debris. Whenever you need to oil the bearings, you will be able to access the interior without having to remove the metal shield. So use the unshielded side of the wheel on the inside.

The pros are Skating outdoors, with little to no cleaning, and those who are tired of having to clean and re-polishing are great candidates for these wheels It is a good idea for them to oil their bearings regularly. Bearings that do not need to be oiled should last longer. It's a nice, quiet day.
