I'm not sure why they recommend loosening the stem because this defeats the purpose of the valve. I simply installed caps with the valve stem closed, and there was no issue or interference. When installing the caps, hand tighten them just enough to keep them in place, but not too much. I just checked my bike and unscrewed the cap; everything appears to be in working order, the valve is closed, and the tire pressure is adequate; hopefully this information is useful.
They're designed for presta valves rather than standard schraders.
My road bike likes it!

It's the little things that count. These are absolutely fantastic. It's far more durable than plastic while remaining incredibly light. They also have a cool appearance. A low-cost adrenaline rush.
These caps are designed to keep the valve's intricate parts clean. They aren't designed to keep air from leaking out of the valve, and I don't use them for that purpose. Presta valves are delicate, especially when compared to the more durable Schraeder valves. Overtightening can damage these aluminum alloy stem caps, but they are more durable than plastic stem caps. These caps are more expensive than plastic caps, but the color options more than make up for it. These caps should last the same amount of time as your bicycle.
I was blown away by how quickly these arrived. My road bike was missing a black plastic cap, and it felt like it was missing something! Plastic caps have a lot of bounce. I knew I wouldn't be able to find it after it careened off the back porch and into the ivy. These caps have a lot of color and don't bounce much. So, if Mr. Butterfingers suffers the same fate, I have a good chance of recovering. I received six as well. What difference does it make if I lose a few? They're a really bright blue, very light, and they screw down perfectly. We were able to get it for less than $5, and we were able to get it for free by using points from our Amazon credit card.
On my two Cannondale bikes, four of the six caps were threaded onto the presto stems. I might be able to force the other two, but they appeared to be quite tight, and I didn't want to risk damaging the stems. I'm still glad I went ahead and bought them. They're a nice upgrade, and they look fantastic. Just don't hold your breath for all six to be fantastic.
This is fantastic! I always lose my plastic valve covers because they split and fall off (most likely due to overtightening). These metal ones aren't going to break, and the color is striking. My bike (matt black with red decals) looks great with them as well. The leftovers were given to friends. I don't anticipate needing to purchase these again, but if I do, I would do so.
These are sturdy and of good quality, but they are still lightweight. When compared to plastic/nylon caps, which appear to be more forgiving of ham-handed installation, they do take a little longer to align with the valve stem. Threading with fists.
Captain Muffintop is how I'd be addressed. haha. These red caps add a splash of color to your bike's tires while also protecting the valves, and they appear to be of high quality. They're on all three of my bicycles.
They've met my expectations. They thread nicely; the plastic type only seems to catch about one and a half threads, whereas these engage all the way down to the bottom. Even feels like there's more room inside for the valve; anodizing is spotty, but given how quickly they'll get dirty, it's probably not a big deal. The size is very similar to that of a factory cap.
