It doesn't work like that at all. Only the chainring is used.
No, that's a 96mm measurement, and a 104mm measurement for a three-plate set.
If everything works out for you, that's great.

On a Shimano MT600 36/26 crank, I converted to 1x and it worked fine. It was only a matter of getting longer bolts (12). I used 5mm because the stock ones were too short, and it's my first time trying narrow wide, and I really like it! There is no need for a chain guide!.
He enjoys it as well. My Surly is equipped with a SLX drivetrain. It's a 1x11, and I believe this chainring is my only option due to Shimano's bogus BCD spacing on the cranks. Fortunately, Krampus enjoys it, so everything is fine. I've only driven it for about 500 miles, so I can't speak to its durability.
With every turn of the pedals on a single speed bike, the chain tension shifts from overly tight to overly loose. And I've double-checked my cranks with a frame-mounted dial indicator as well as a higher-resolution digital gauge. The eccentricity issues in this ring are most likely due to the quality of the chainring.
The difference in quality between this one and a less expensive chainring is obvious. I only used it once because I needed a larger chainring, but I'm confident it will last a long time.
The gear is light and comfortable. Despite the fact that my bike's gearing was new, the crankset was not. Evenly spaced, 104mm attachment holes are required for my crank. The attachment holes on Shimano's new 12 speed crank have been rearranged. I chose Wolf Tooth as my costume.
The M7100 was exactly what I needed. I'm sure the chainring is fine, but I accidentally ordered the wrong one. 1x, one chainring was all that was written in the product description. The fact that it was for a 1x11 chainring and cassette was not mentioned. A 1x12 is the type of bicycle I ride. I wish the product description was more specific because this one will not fit on my bike.
(It's 1/8) on my. It's compatible with my single-speed chain (half-speed). 1/8) on my polo bike, at least after 6 hours; I'll update the review as more data becomes available.
Shimano has done it again with a great product!.
